We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ruth Austin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ruth below.
Ruth, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made (either in terms of time or money)? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
The best investment I’ve made as an artist has been investing in myself – specifically, taking the leap to explore mixed media art after years of working in watercolor. While I loved creating art after my daughters left for college, I found watercolors limiting. I couldn’t achieve the bright colors I love or layer and edit my work the way I envisioned. As someone who loves to experiment and add depth to my pieces, I felt constrained.
Taking mixed media courses and working with art mentors was a significant investment of both time and money, but it transformed my artistic journey. These experiences helped me discover techniques that truly express my connection to nature – like incorporating my own hand-painted papers, vintage materials, and multiple layers of media. Now I can capture the joy and wonder I feel while hiking in Northern Arizona’s diverse landscapes in a way that feels authentic to me.
This investment went beyond just learning new techniques – it helped me find my artistic voice and the confidence to create the vibrant, layered pieces that bring me (and hopefully others) such joy. Sometimes the best investments aren’t just about financial returns, but about giving yourself permission to grow and explore what truly makes your heart sing.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Nature has always been my greatest inspiration. Having spent my early childhood on the east coast and then my later years in the beauty of northern Arizona, I developed a deep appreciation for diverse landscapes early in life. While I studied graphic design in college and built a career in that field, my heart always pulled me toward fine art.
It wasn’t until my daughters left for college that I gave myself permission to fully explore my passion for painting. After experimenting with watercolors, I discovered mixed media collage, which became my true artistic home. This technique allows me to layer various materials – acrylics, my own hand-painted papers, vintage materials, and more – creating depth and texture that brings my nature-inspired pieces to life.
Living in Northern Arizona, I’m constantly inspired by our changing seasons and diverse landscapes. I often take photos while hiking, which later become the foundation for my paintings. My pieces feature wildlife, birds, and flowers in compositions that aim to convey both serenity and joy. I’m most proud when collectors tell me my art brings them a moment of peace or makes them smile.
You can find my work at The Artists’ Gallery in Flagstaff. When I’m not in my studio creating or working part-time as a graphic designer, you’ll likely find me hiking local trails or tending to my garden – always gathering inspiration for my next piece.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part is the genuine connections I’ve made with other artists and collectors. Working part-time at The Artists’ Gallery has been especially wonderful – I meet art enthusiasts from all over the world and continue to be inspired by the talented artists I work alongside. There’s nothing quite like seeing someone’s face light up when they connect with one of my pieces. Those moments remind me why I create art in the first place.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I’ve done some research into NFTs, but I haven’t found a compelling reason to pursue them for my art practice. My work is very tactile and personal – I create physical pieces that collectors can touch and experience in their spaces. That direct connection between art and collector feels right for me.
