We recently connected with Charlyn Stanberry and have shared our conversation below.
Charlyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you share a story with us from back when you were an intern or apprentice? Maybe it’s a story that illustrates an important lesson you learned or maybe it’s a just a story that makes you laugh (or cry)?
My first job on Capitol Hill was as an unpaid intern with a Congressional Caucus. The kicker was that I was a 29 year old recent law school graduate who already had a Master’s degree and years of professional experience. When I started interning, my job was to answer the phones, deliver and open mail, stuff envelopes and set up for meetings. I approached each task with humility and joy. After several months, when there was an opening in the office, I was offered a job and that was the start of my advocacy career. Always know that no task is too small or insignificant.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

She also enriches the academic field as an Adjunct Professor at Florida International University, where she teaches federal advocacy and public policy.

Her educational credentials include a Juris Doctorate from Florida International University- College of Law, as well as a Master of Public Administration and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from the University of Central Florida.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients has been word of mouth and ironically, LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a great source to share professional news, announcements and accomplishments which new clients appreciate to see growth and trajectory.

Any advice for managing a team?
My advice would be to always be authentic in your management approach and set an open-door policy with boundaries. For example, when I was Chief of Staff my staffers knew they could contact me any time except for when I was with my family. It was very important for me to model a work-life blend for them.
