We recently connected with Demetrius Green and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Demetrius, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Part of The name comes after my nickname of WoeD from which my friends call me in New Orleans. Snackz comes from me being known for my desserts because I’m a baker by trade. Grill Comes from my experience from cooking on grills or at family BBQ’s. So you get (WoeD Snackz And Grill) a Mobile Food Truck known for its loaded fries, garlic noodles, Wings, strips, burgers & Desserts.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started cooking when I was a teen. My mother and grandmother gave me the tools to be able to create meals with the smallest ingredients. My mother showed me the ropes on baking and cooking while grandma gave some recipes and pointers on taste and quality. I was a meat cutter for 15yrs giving me the insight on the good cuts of meats to use in my business to maximize taste and quality. Along with baking desserts at family gatherings I started coming up with my own style of cakes. To the day I have over 35 different cakes I can make from scratch. I used to love to BBQ for the family, my favorite two things to cook are Ribs And Steaks. It’s another reason I call myself “Chefwoethacook”..
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Yes In 2021 I decided to invest in a take out only restaurant during the pandemic. I came into the contract with a reasonable rent from the company of 1500 plus utilities. Towards the end of the pandemic they decided to increase everyone’s rent. By 2022 the pandemic was still affecting small businesses and the company made rent range from 3650-4800 which led me to forfeit my deposit and move out. Going back to catering only slowed the business down to a bare minimum.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
After getting out of the contract the take out only restaurant, I was able to rent a food truck from a close friend of mines. Within a year I found myself back in the same position because he decided to raise the rent on the truck to were I decided to return the truck only to purchase my own and build it. I had to shut my business down for 6months while I thought myself how to build my own food truck. I started to build my very first truck in August of 2023 and completed it in December of 2023. Now that I built my own I can always say it’s been built off my hard work and back bone.
