Brian, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
The increasing commoditization of photography.


Brian, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a commercial photographer, with an emphasis on portraiture.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think personal recommendations are probably the biggest source of new clients for me. I think people are usually just looking for someone who does good work, and is enjoyable to work with, and often just look to a trusted colleague for advice.
For the last 10 years I have been working extensively for Microsoft, for multiple clients within that organization. Nearly all new connections there come from direct recommendations from co-workers.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Having a finished piece that you are proud of, and that is useful to the client.
