We recently connected with Kenneth Hoursey and have shared our conversation below.
Kenneth , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
My whole life growing up I was completely fascinated with media and the arts. I still love them to this day very strongly how creative people can truly be. I love all forms of art as well mostly dance and music but, art in general is just the greatest thing ever because it just lets you be yourself. I was always told to be yourself at all times and what’s meant for you will come. For a while I felt my life was supposed to be in entertainment and the industry, I even went to college for it, but throughout my journey of learning more and more about life, my experiences throughout life whether good or bad, and the people who have poured into me and help me progress to where I am, I then realized maybe the arts weren’t for me as a career. I’ve danced professionally and been on many sets and worked on and off camera but I felt like the love I once had was starting to fade. I wasn’t understanding my lack of enthusiasm for art but as I continued on I realized the things that make me the most excited and something that truly motivates me to get up everyday was my natural ability to make change in people. I started working in the medical field and picking up and seeing all the different people going through different things and hardships made me genuinely upset, so I always took it upon myself to make sure my patients always get a good laugh or better energy by the time our time together ends. That’s when it hit me that my purpose was more than just entertainment its to be someone who brings positive change to those around him. My patient told me my soul and heart could change anyone’s day which made me realize I can be more hands on with the people and change and save lives one day at a time. I never realized my impact as individual until recently I’ll be honest but hearing those words knowing I could do great things for those suffering was all the motivation I needed. I wish I had more motivation when I was suffering so I can’t turn my back on the people who suffer just like I have. Life isn’t fair to anyone but we can always do our best to make it a little better if we stopped thinking of ourselves and realized how much we do have versus what we don’t have. Life is not about you, how can you be at peace watching the people around you suffer in pain and do nothing about it? You wouldn’t stay in a burning building just because your apartment isn’t burning, think about someone other than yourself for a moment and realize there are people who would kill to be where you are and have what you have. Love to all the people who got me to where I am today and to my village I am nothing without any of you whether we talk everyday or not at all, you will never leave my heart.
Kenneth , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into my field of work by listening to myself. People told me I was always doing to much for others but not for myself, so I locked in with myself and joined a great group of individuals who want to make their community better for the sake of others. You can tell when there’s more in store for you.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I’ve seen a lot of things in life, and I’m saying this to everyone, learn the difference between surviving and living. For a while all I did was survive, and put myself in predicaments where I could’ve lost my own life. Taught me the value of life and that you can genuinely make a difference for yourself, one instance was I saw a boy in my neighborhood get shot and killed at a block party and what hurts me the most is that I could’ve saved him if I was a little faster after I grabbed my other friends and moved them to the gate by the time I turned around to run and save him from crossfire I was too late. I’ve been without a home multiple times trying to figure out what to do and it made result to dumb solutions. Keep going because you never when you’ll win.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Honesty, and being my genuine self.
