Today we’d like to introduce you to Patty Mcfarlane
Hi Patty, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My art journey started because I wanted to raise money to make comfort packs for kids going through chemotherapy in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where my husband and I were living at the time. I started by making cards with simple line drawings, painting them with watercolors then selling them to tourists in the markets, after about a year I won a scholarship for Tamara Laportes “Lifebook “ which was great for me because I was learning in many different styles from lots of different teachers, I think that is why I still dabble today in many different styles.
My husband and I moved back to the USA in 2021 and I have been working hard to improve my skills and get my name out into the world, in 2022 I got involved with several online auctions/markets and still primarily sell online today,
I have been the poster artist for Quiltopia Oregon for 2 years in a row now and am teaching at their “quilters in the garden” event for the second year as well.
I feel like my art journey is just beginning and has brought me new friendships, new skills and feeds my heart and soul each day
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I guess my biggest struggle was when we left Vallarta and I had to leave my studio and everything in it behind and start completely over! I had to build my supplies back up and in a city I had never lived in I had to find the best way to make and sell my art.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am primarily a mixed media artist but also work with watercolor, acrylic and oil pastel, I am primarily known for my expressive floral paintings, but truly I love to paint all things with all kinds of supplies, over the last year or so I have been dabbling in mixed media collage art which is really fun for me, I love using bright bold colors in my art which I think was influenced by my 7 years living in Mexico and my very favorite thing is creating lovely layers of interest.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I love to have fun with my work, I love bright bold and beautiful colors! Art should be fun!
