We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Briana McPhee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Briana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
With being a self taught loctician, I can say my growth speaks for itself. I hope with every client I get that my hopes is to bless them in multiple ways. Yes, i can do their hair but I strive to add to the life whether it’s hair growth or just being a listening ear when they get serviced. I want my legacy to be talked about now not once I’m gone. With every service I try my best to make sure my client is completely satisfied. Yes I get paid to do a service but did i help your self-esteem grow and over time have you seen improvement in your hair. The legacy I’m building right now is based on the satisfaction that all my clients were not just serviced but satisfied and lives have changed for the better.

Briana, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Briana of BriStylez. I am an Orlando native loctician. I service all loc needs such as retwist and starting locs. I also provide services for natural hair such as braids, blowouts and twists. I started doing hair when I was about 16, plaiting and twisting my little brother’s hair. As i got older i was asked to retwist locs on a friend, which i had never done before. He talked me through the whole process and from there i started retwisting locs for other people i grew up. Along the way, I learned to do sewins and braiding with weave. In 2015, i decided to branch out and make it more public of me doing locs. In 2020, I started posting my work on Instagram and started getting my clients. Fast forward to today, I’m now in my salon suite and have launched my booking site. I have picked up more clients and produced a hair growth oil that i use on my clients as well as myself. Many of my clients have purchased the oil from me and rave at the results they have been getting. I hope to increase my clientele so that by 2023 i can make this my full time passion.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
When building my social media, i started doing tiktok and content videos this year. Adding them to my personal and business instagram to help level me up when it come to reaching new clients. I add hastags that are relevant to my work which also helps me reach other platforms. My advice to new business owners is always create content. People are mainly driven off what they can see happen from start to finish, give sneak peeks to build the suspense.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Last year, i did about four new clients instalocs, which is where i start their locs from scratch using just their natural hair. Only one of them is still a faithful client which made me a little discouraged at one point because i knew that someone different was now gaining the other three as a client. Even though i lost them as clients i never stop working on my brand and trying to reach other who can benefit from me which in this year has allowed me to now be in my own salon suite.
