We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Anita Powell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Anita, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
My mission statement and mantra for life is “make an impact while making an income” , so in addition to a full portfolio of clients, I do a lot of philanthropic work. I volunteer with many markets in my area, I am on the board for Tri-Base Small Business Co-op, Mildenhall Spouses’ Association, and Tri-Base West Indies. It has been very hard trying to find a balance between paying clients and volunteering time, but I am so proud of what i do with these organizations that I don’t mind devoting what little free time I have to them. My goal is to make a difference, bring a smile, a safe place, and share my story with as many people that are willing to hear it. It is comforting to know there is a light at the end of the tunnel when you’re feeling hopeless.
I have also been involving my children very heavily with my business in hopes to pass it on to them in the future. This would be an excellent way to provide for them while they are finding their own path or going to school. A lot of family businesses are forced on their kids, but I just want to provide them the opportunity to serve themselves while they grow into the people they want to be.
As a West Indian, I strive to show up for my people and build us a seat at the table. I head a Caribbean Heritage Association that hosts events to connect and educate people on the culture, pride, food, and heritage of the west indies! There is so much more to the Caribbean than just Sandals Jamaica and our goal is to showcase our countries and pave the way for future dispora to take pride in their heritage.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a business owner, military spouse, and mother of 3 in that order! I own a social media marketing agency that has finally gained some traction. I started my business right before covid, so my first year was a bit of a struggle. Most of my work has been with local small businesses who need the most help, but we are finally transitioning to a bigger market. I love what I do, from following trend alerts, creating content, and managing multiple platforms, it has been such a treat getting to learn about the different types of markets and audiences.
The main problem I aim to solve is businesses not knowing what to post, when to post, and how to post. So I step in and provide content calendars with active trends, created and curated content for social media site, and blog guidance. Since starting my company I have impacted at least 10 businesses this past year.
I also use my brand influence to boost the many volunteer opportunities and philanthropic organizations I am part of. I think this is something that really sets us apart and sends out our good vibes. Instead of just donating money to charities, we also donate our time and resources too.
The best part is having my kids so involved. Living overseas on a military base in a foreign country is tough on them. They don’t get to grow up surrounded by family, so we make our own. Our clients to into friends and the workload turns into distraction. They love the chance to learn about entrepreneurship and love to follow the example I am setting of staying true to my culture throughout my central business themes.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
For the first year, my business was really struggling. I couldn’t get a client to save my life. but then I stopped focusing on forcing people to noticing me and let them come to me organically. I started going to local business events, networking events, and markets. I would connect with others and let my personality shine through. After that the clients started flowing in. I showcased the quality of my work through them and their businesses and it has made me one of the most in-demand content creators in my local area!
Have you ever had to pivot?
Being a military spouse brings a lot of uncertainty, inconsistency, and a whole lot of moving! Every few years I was having to restart my career and find something new that could be done in whatever new location we were in. I’ve gone from mechanic, to event coordinator, to real estate and I finally got sick of having to uproot and change every step of the way. Starting my own business gives me the freedom to work from wherever I am, included lengthy vacations. It took a while to get up and running, but the reward has been immense.
