He also works as an Activity Technician and artist for Carilion Adjunct therapy where he teaches Adolescent youth how to find their voice through music and slam poetry.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has truly been seasons of highs and lows but I stay poised to create and find myself through music and poetry. I come from a small town that is considered top ten most segregated cities in the whole country. Sometimes in these places diversity is needed and welcomed more by the numbers than the soul which is unfortunate. Sometimes I stick out like a sore thumb but we are all supposed to in a sense
For me I love creating/reviewing my life through music. I am constantly journaling a myriad of ideas as lessons for therapy, Sometimes when I am creating my ideas get misconstrued and the biggest obstacles are when others make assumptions about the motives and intentions about what I create. I never thought that people would listen but here we are. My path has been about refinement and enlightenment. I write it, record it, release it, and keep pushing it. The lessons I’ve learned are in my music and to clear the air a bit I will never ever water myself down or minimize myself for any lame’s comfort. To be a creative is to live an amplified life and I will never turn down for anyone. Art is always subjective and if anyone feels a type of way then art is doing what art it is supposed to do. It is important to know that logically people who try to truly find peace are unbothered and do not seek revenge or validation through attention seeking behavior and or malice. I’ve been met with hatred for being misunderstood for trying to find understanding. Even under the lens of social bias and the court of public opinion I choose to stay poised and unapologetically me because you simply cannot argue or communicate with people who are committed to misunderstanding you.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My day to day now is more about more service and loving harder. I am evolving in my work, teaching creative writing and what it means to show love. I plan Activities for kids and adults on the daily. I am an Activity Technician for Carilion adolescent unit for Adjunct Therapy, I do voice over work and I make music that I believe in. I have a radio show on Ohio Based Station Outworld fleet radio called The Hip-Hop Lab where I talk about my first love Hip-Hop (https://live365.com/station/OutWorld-Fleet-Radio-a13714). I also serve as the Worship Director for my church Bethany Christian Church Where I am learning what it means to be the hands and feet of Christ. I hope to be known for being able to continue to share who I am unapologetically. I believe what sets me apart is my drive. My mother is my greatest teacher in what it means to show kindness and to have a great work ethic. My mother often says I am very patient so I guess patience is my superpower which is often tested..
What was your favorite childhood memory?
The night my father took me to see the original “Karate Kid” at this theater called The Salem Valley 8 back in the 80’s. I think my dad at the time really wanted to see the movie more than me because when I was three I was more inclined to watch animated features but he surprised me with this gem of a movie. My favorite quote that always stood out to me was when Mr. Miyagi told Daniel “You Trust The Quality Of What You Know, Not Quantity.” Even as a child that rang true to me as if saying be mindful, teachable, and caring to others. To filter out mindlessness and to cherish and share wisdom.
