Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chukwuemeka Chukwu. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Chukwuemeka, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
the most meaningful and favorite project I have worked on thus far is the body of work and exhibition INSIDE the CADMUS that was on display and the community College of Baltimore county. It was a stipend funded project I had ample time to make ambitious paintings for their Catonsville gallery. At this time there was COVID and lockdown. so I had ample time to focus at home on my biggest paintings till date. I focused on my emergence from an architectural design degree from MICA and translating all what I had learned in such a field to broader fine art and painting techniques

Chukwuemeka, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In my paintings, I explore the intricate interplay between materials and themes, drawing
inspiration from diverse realms such as science, architecture, media, and gaming. Working
primarily with acrylics, gels, and tapes, my creative process is akin to a language, translating
experiences into a vibrant ecosystem of expression.
While my art traverses a wide spectrum of interests, from automotive journalism to engineering,
architecture, and gaming, it also delves into poignant political themes, particularly those
surrounding race, black identity, and the diasporic experience. I draw insights from both the use
of materials and imagery, infusing each piece with layers of meaning and introspection.
Growing up in Lagos, gaming was a significant part of my upbringing, influencing my artistic
vision and technique. This upbringing instilled in me a deep appreciation for digital media, which
I translate into the analog form of traditional painting methods.
My approach to painting is multidimensional, blending intuitive experimentation with
architectural knowledge and structured systems. Each artwork is a fusion of these elements,
presenting a dynamic visual narrative that invites viewers to engage in unique discussions.
From restrained mark-making to disciplined applications of color, I challenges traditional notions
of abstract painting with my work, incorporating camouflages and skins reflective of my mastery
in both gaming and visual art.
Through my art, I seek to initiate conversations about inclusion, the challenges faced as a black
man in online spaces exemplified for me in gaming, and broader societal issues such as gun
violence and systemic racism. My childhood in Surulere, Lagos, and my technical expertise and
architectural background serve as the foundation for deeper exploration within my work.
Ultimately, my art embodies a commitment to exploration and restlessness, guided by a
whimsical yet strategic approach to creativity. It is my hope that my paintings serve as catalysts
for introspection and dialogue, challenging perceptions and inspiring meaningful connections
across diverse landscapes of experience.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The freedom, I could simply never see myself working a Strict 9-5. going through the motions. little to no difference in each day. A routine can be healthy for some while others may need constant change to thrive.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The act of furthering my craft. I’m always looking to emit more complexity from my work. Always looking at the aspects of painting i may excel in and how to innovate.
