We recently connected with Chengmin(michael) Yu and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chengmin(Michael), thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Though my parents are not musician, I have been music-educated since I was born because they are music lovers and very knowledgable about all kinds of art. I was obsessed with playing piano, singing and dancing since I was 4. Apparently I didn’t decide to pursue my career as an musician at that time but almost every little things I’ve experienced as I grow up lead me to that. I self-taught myself guitar, jazz piano and singing as I grow up and participate many shows from school and our community. I found that all the enjoyable moments were about music. Writing songs, playing instruments, performing on stage…… By the time I step into high school when i was 16, I realize that music is all I want to do and forever it will be and I should not waste any time on things not related to music. I dropped out the school and went to Beijing started to pursue my music career at 16, that’s when my life really begins.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Michael(Chengmin) Yu. Artist name Mic__Yun. I’m a Singer-songwriter and music producer. Besides these I also work as pianist, arranger, guitarist/bassist, mixing engineer. My music focusing on R&B and Hiphop but it various. It delivering dreamy, cozy vibe and sometimes energetic and groovy. I want all my fans and audience immersing in the emotions of my music as they related to my stories(hopefully) and finally they can find inner peace in my music and stay true to themselves.(these are also my life goals) Besides being an artists, I produce, write, record music for my clients and the genre of the music can be more extensive. My advantages is that I can precisely understand what my clients wants even when their requirements are not very clear(it happens a lot on non-musician clients) and also the quality of music will speak for itself. But what really sets me apart from others is I can be a good album producers since I have the knowledge and skills to produce a album from 0 to end. From writing to recording to producing, I can control all the things from the start. If the clients are happy about my music, I have the confidence to satisfy my clients with a great album.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Many people in any creative industry will struggle with this situation and this really sets you from other people. I think the key is consistency and resilience. Because people starts their career with interest and passion but pursing it as an career cannot driven by interest. I’ve been writing and producing only whenever I feel want to in college and I found that it was very inefficient. And I start to force myself to create something everyday and disciplined myself strictly and it turns out very productive. In order to be competitive no matter what industry I’m in, consistency and discipline are always the foundation.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I’m not considering myself successful on building audience on social media but I’ve been tried to do it for the past years including instagram and TikTok. I’ve opened an account and posting me singing covers and originals and it turns out not bad. I will try to reply any comments no matter they’re positive or negative and maybe chat a little bit. Since I was singing covers, there’re some comments said the songs they want to hear and then I will pick one and sing it for my next video. I feel like it’s a good strategy and interact with fans as much as I can will gradually growing fanbase. But I haven’t continue doing it for long time since I have lots of work and school going on and it’s hard to balance the time.
