We were lucky to catch up with Princess Onums recently and have shared our conversation below.

Princess, appreciate you joining us today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your creative career?

My last job completely changed my routine and mindset. I wasn’t a morning person, but the job pushed me to wake up earlier and be more disciplined. At first, it felt like too much, but I soon realized that waking up early gave me more control over my day. I learned that the only real limits are the ones I set for myself. It wasn’t just about getting things done, it was about creating space for creativity and focus. That shift has stuck with me, helping me manage my time better and work smarter, as a creative.

Princess, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

My name is Onumaegbu Chidinma Ruth, but I’m widely known by my brand name, Princess Onums. I’ve had a diverse journey that spans several creative and professional disciplines. It all began while I was still in school, when I first stepped into the modeling industry. For two years, I dedicated my weekends to traveling for catwalk training, laying the foundation for what would later become my career in modeling. My passion for performance led me into pageantry, and eventually, I started hosting events, working with a TV station, and creating content as a digital influencer.
Although I studied Science Laboratory Technology, my true passion lies in the beauty and fashion industry. I founded Onums Beaute, my own beauty company that specializes in makeup products tailored for women. I also host a range of events, including corporate functions, runway shows, pageants, TV shows, and live events. Additionally, I am a runway and commercial model, a fashion and beauty content creator, and someone who lives and breathes creativity.
What sets me apart is my unique style and energy. I believe no one else can bring the same vibe and authenticity that I bring to every project or brand I work with. Whether it’s modeling, hosting, or content creation, I infuse everything I do with a level of passion and creativity that helps brands stand out in a crowded market.
I am deeply committed to my work, and I take every project seriously. We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.

The most rewarding part of being a creative is knowing that what I create can resonate with others. It’s not just about expressing myself, it’s about helping people connect with something they relate to or need, even if they don’t always show it. Just by living authentically and sharing my journey, I can inspire others in ways I might not even realize. It’s powerful to know I am playing a role in society and using my voice to make a difference, all while doing what I love. There’s also a sense of discovery in the creative process itself. working through challenges, finding unexpected solutions, and watching an idea evolve into something tangible.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

For a long time, I held onto the belief that certain experiences whether failures, setbacks, or detours were just lost time. I used to think, “If it didn’t lead to the outcome I wanted, it wasn’t worth it.”
But as I gained more perspective, I realized that every experience, even the challenging ones, taught me something valuable.
The key shift was realizing that every situation, no matter how tough, contributed to my growth in some way. Whether it was developing resilience through failure, gaining new skills through unexpected projects, or learning more about myself through mistakes, each experience added a layer of understanding that built me into who I am today.
By changing my perspective, I started to see everything as an opportunity for growth whether or not it aligned with my original plans. The lesson was that the value in any experience comes from what you take away from it, not just the outcome you expect. It’s all part of the journey, shaping your character and expanding your knowledge.
