We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Effy Wang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Effy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’ve always been actively involved in live music performance scenes since I was a kid. So for me, pursuing an artistic career and being a musician is something I’ve always wanted to do. But the process of pursuing an artistic path wasn’t easy, especially when you were facing the pressures from your family. So back then when I was 18, I had to choose a different major for my first bachelor’s degree. During these 4 years and 1 year internship after college, I tried many different types of work. Some of them are nothing related to music. But something always pulls me back to the artistic path and reminds me of what I want to do with my life. And I think it was at those moments I could finally have the courage to be myself and fight for the path I’ve always wanted to go. And now here I am.

Effy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, my name is Effy Wang. I’m a singer-songwriter, music producer and DJ based in Los Angeles. How I got into music, it’s kind of a long story. But I guess It all starts with the big cassette player in my family’s living room. My parents love music, especially my dad. He had a few huge drawers full of cassettes and CDs. And I remember he always played different songs after work and on weekends. I’ve been singing and performing on stage since I was five. I started to learn piano in middle school and later picked up guitar and other instruments like drum sets and CDJs. I listened to a lot of Mandopop and K-pop when I was a kid, and then I fell in love with pop music from the 2000s, as well as rock music, hip-hop and EDM. At 18 I learned to produce music, starting with GarageBand then Logic Pro, Protools, and Ableton Live. Now I make beats, produce pop songs and dance music.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
What drives my creative journey I would say it’s the eagerness to connect and resonate with others. I hope my music can take me to see the bigger world and help me build those connections with my listeners. My goal is to travel around the world, do tours, play originals and remixes, and bring this amazing energy to people. It’s all about connections and energies, and we all need each other. I hope my music can take me on this journey and leave some good memories and experiences.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I feel pretty comfortable with social media and I enjoy the process of making content to promote my music or even just show my audience the different sides of my life as a musician. When I started to build my audience on social media, the first thing I did was try to make high-quality content. I would make a list of what types of content I could create related to my music or remixes, specific to which music to use, the color of the video background, clothing, hairstyle, where I would like to film the content, and how I present myself in front of the camera. I always believe that a great content video with the right promotion and target of a group will help attract a good amount of traffic and gain listeners. Also, consistency is the key, which we all know about how the algorithm works these days on social media. So to me, it’s all about how you brand yourself, your products, and the stories behind them.
