We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dave Kimbrell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dave, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My fifth grade teacher, told my Mother at a Teacher Parent meeting that I was an artist. She told her that the only way to get my attention was to hold up something with color. My mother then started art lessons at that moment and backed me throughout my life.

Dave, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
This has always been my biggest downfall. I never was able to find “My Brand”. In the gallery world, you must have style or some sort of signature image that relates to you and I could never find one form or art to grab and hold onto. When I would go as far as I could with one way of creating, I would go to an new one. I love to paint portraits in acrylic now and in the past, when I started working in oils, it was what brought me the most joy. Then I discovered carving in stone. I do have to say, this gave me the moment of artful bliss that I have not been able to find since. Unfortunately, I am too old to carve stone now and I do miss it but we all have to do, whatever outlet we can find to create in this world.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I get most of my work from Facebook and I discovered that if I posted many photos of fun, funny post and meems, that when I finished a portrait I would post that. Each day, I would post 4 FB fun post and have built up my friends list to 3,500 and my followers are getting close to 5,ooo. I know it is not much, but it is more than any gallery views I ever had or even when I had a large studio in an artist complex. And when I did post a photo of my recent portrait, it would bring me at least one or two commissions.

Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
It does intrigue me but to be honest, I need tangible money in order to pay bills. I do see that there have been many artist making thousands of NFT’s or money, or is it money, I don’t know. I feel that I will never be able to understand this form of payment.
