We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shani Sibrian-boyes. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shani below.
Shani, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
In high school, I was enrolled into art class as an extra-curricular subject. After the first required year was over, I signed up for a couple more years because I really enjoyed the art classes. I was learning new techniques, new mediums, discovering how to express myself, and how to see objects/subjects in different ways. Because of those years in high school art class, I grew interested in figuring out what artist careers I could pursue for the future, which is how I discovered graphic designing. During my senior year of high school is when I began to set goals for myself to become a professional artist, by gathering a portfolio together, researching colleges, and practicing my art during my spare time.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Creepy Sweets is a home-based baking business that specializes in custom cakes and cupcakes for all occasions. I began Creepy Sweets with a heavy influence on the things I enjoy such as Halloween, cute and spooky designs, and rock music (with subgenres including metal and punk). By creating custom treats that focused on these themes, I had knowledge of what my customer was referencing so that it could be easier for me to create a design, color scheme, and idea for their custom treats. This also gave me a chance to have tons of fun! I have recently began accepting non-spooky ideas for custom treats in hopes to expand my techniques and design ideas. Some non-spooky themes I’ve worked on recently include Spongebob Squarepants, Lizzie McGuire, and Sailor Moon.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is when your customer loves your creation as much as you do. Nothing warms my heart more than when I present a cake (or any treats) to a customer and their eyes light up with happiness and they exclaim with joy. It is so sweet and such a simple gesture but it is the BEST feeling.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
As a creative, sometimes there are days that we have infinite inspiration, ideas, and energy to design. Then there are other days that we are just in a slump and are affected by artists’ block. Art is a feeling so it is difficult to switch it on and off when your emotions and mind can’t catch up right away. Especially working as an artist and needing to sustain a business with your art, it is difficult to keep up with trends when all you want to do is create freely without having to force yourself to make something that may be uncomfortable or something you may not understand.
