We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ryan Summer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ryan below.
Ryan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you’ve thought about whether to sign with an agent or manager?
Yes! I have an agent and they are fantastic. It took a while to sign with this calibre of agent, the agent I was with previously was mainly for small roles and commercials. I wanted more lead roles and international opportunities. I applied to about 40 agents over a period of months, but couldn’t seem to land one. One day I decided to see who’s books are open on Spotlight, and I saw my current agent. I applied and they quickly got back to me. We had a few exchanges over email and I went to London to meet them for an interview, they signed me on the spot. I was so happy and have been with them since.
Even though I received countless no’s, I kept improving my profile and kept applying, and it certainly paid off.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m an Actor and DJ. I love what I do and encourage anyone to follow what they truly enjoy.
I fell into acting by chance really. I used to work behind the camera, producing short films and project managing commercial shoots. I was on a contract that was cut short, I found myself with free time, at this point acting was something I was interested in but nothing more than that, I thought while I have the chance, let’s join an agency and acting classes and see if I can do it…. it has stuck with me ever since.
DJ’n also began by chance. I was always interested in music, during my party years in my youth I had friends that were DJ’s. So I was around it but never took that step to learn. It wasn’t until I met my girlfriend, who’s a DJ, who taught me the foundations. It was like a fire was lit. From then on, I learnt more and more, starting getting gigs and i’ve ran with it for years now.
I’m proud of so many projects that I’ve been part of. However, if I have to narrow it down, I’m proud of playing DC Scott Chester on Emmerdale and DJ’n for Babolat at The Wimbledon Club this year.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Keep watching live performances and entertainment outside of your home. Go to your theatre, cinema, comedy club, Orchestra etc. Live performances are amazing, it’s so important that we see these talented people and support their industry by watching them. It’s a luxury that not everyone has in the world and you should make the most of it.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Working with amazing people that I would never normally get chance to meet.
