We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tareq Alawneh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tareq thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
As an entrepreneur, unforeseen challenges are going to constitute the bulk of your workdays. It might be something big, like a long-committed employee who decided to quit or a new competitor emerging in your area, or something small, like a deadline that’s getting pushed back due to technical issues. Learning to face and overcome these challenges without losing your cool or compromising your long-term goals is one of the most important — yet most difficult parts of becoming a business owner. Personalities who prefer to plan tend to have a harder time dealing with unforeseen challenges than personalities who thrive in an improvisational setting, but unexpected challenges are universally demanding. By nature, they’re unpredictable and often arise in sudden, unanticipated ways. They may disrupt previously existing plans or increase the amount of time, money or effort necessary to complete an otherwise straightforward task.
Dealing with customers from all over the world, you will have the chance to meet the good and the bad. One of the problems we had is fraud identity and stolen credit card information that lead to chargebacks. In the early stages of any business mistakes or wrong behaviors could be lethal to your business or idea, your business still fragile and you need to make sure control your emotion reponse.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
To have the vision to attain a specific goal in life is one thing, but to grind each day, hustle, make tough choices and bold decisions, face challenges and overcome them all, and put in consistent efforts to turn those visions into a beautiful reality is a different thing altogether. To belong to the latter category, people may have to put in incessant efforts and leave no stone unturned to attain their desired success in their respective industries. So many professionals from different parts of the world have done that and proved their mettle as true-blue professionals and entrepreneurs. I started iRent Car Rental after working for a corporate car rental leader in the world. When you work for a big corporate usually you learn how to work on tasks , not how to run the business, in my case the combination between going to school for Business and working for sales and business administration ignited the idea of starting my own car rental company.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
1. Be open and welcoming Small actions such as welcoming and introducing yourself to new colleagues can lead to meaningful relationships. Engage with coworkers and customers in positive and creative ways, be generous with your resources and work within your community to show you value it.
2. Exhibit transparency
Being truthful and honest builds trust and can improve a business’s or individual’s reputation.
3. Keep your promises
Follow through on commitments and timelines, whether it means meeting deadlines, reviewing a colleague’s work or resolving a customer service issue.
4. Give more than what’s expected
Another way you can build a reputation is doing more than what’s expected or asked of you. For example, if a client asks for a 3% savings discount, offering a 5% discount might lead to further business. People appreciate added effort and generosity, and small gestures can impact your reputation by highlighting that you value your connection with customers.

Any advice for managing a team?
1. Encourage ongoing one-on-ones One of the most powerful ways to improve employee morale is through frequent communication.
2. Give employees the tools to ask for feedback
Traditionally, the process of feedback has been led by managers as a means to help employees course correct and grow.
3. Train your managers to become better coaches
Teaching your managers to seek out the unique talents of their employees will foster an environment that builds on those attributes, which also helps businesses remain agile during challenging times.
