We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Angela Gibson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Angela, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
The name of our company originated from a conversation with a close friend who I consider a sister. I was expressing my frustration with a previous business partner and feeling defeated. During our talk, my sister friend inspired me, as she always does. She reminded me that I was constantly “pouring” into everyone else’s cup, and now it was time for me to “pour” into my own. At that moment, “Libation African Drum and Dance Company” was born. The term “libation” simply refers to the act of pouring.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started my African dance journey at the age of 19 when I was invited to a stage performance as an usher. As the curtains opened, I stood there mesmerized for the entire two-hour show by the dances, music, songs, and costumes. That following Monday, I took my first African dance class, and I haven’t looked back since.
Libation offers traditional African performances from the diaspora, featuring traditional costumes, instruments, songs, and rhythms. We also provide team-building exercises, community classes, and mental health support through dance. Additionally, we offer a wide range of handmade African accessories.
What sets us apart is our deep respect for the tradition of African dance, which we teach in the manner it deserves. I take great pride in the individuals I am fortunate to partner with on this journey. It hasn’t always been easy, but we believe there is only upward momentum from here. I want our potential clients, followers, and fans to know that we are dedicated to bringing authenticity to everything we do.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
After moving to a new state, I was approached by a local studio owner to teach African dance classes. At first, I thought this had to be a dream. I was given the opportunity to create a class schedule that reflected my expertise and designed an environment where African dance was a central focus. Ultimately, I founded a dance company that allowed me to pursue my passion. However, everything changed when Covid hit and the world shut down.
During that time, I took the opportunity to reflect, confront toxic patterns, and navigate shifting personalities, which helped me grow. Once the world began to reopen, I realized that neither my circumstances nor I were the same. Feeling the need for a fresh start, I decided to leave the studio and the name of the dance company I had started behind, but the dancers and drummers came along with me.
I rebranded the company, established a new organization, and I am currently in the process of building it from the ground up. Throughout this journey, I have learned that from my tears, a smile emerges that grows bigger with every piece I choreograph. My struggles have shown me that such challenges are essential for growth. Through my resilience, I have discovered peace.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I feel like I’m constantly “pivoting.” As a small business owner, costume designer, accessories maker, and choreographer, I also juggle a full-time job. My day is filled with shifting gears — I work during the daytime, take calls for my small business, and when I’m off, I dive into rehearsals, performances, and creating costumes. On top of all that, I have a family to care for as well. I constantly take off one hat and put on another, every day. Ideally, I would love to make a living from my business, but until then, I’ll continue to pivot everywhere, always with a smile.
