We recently connected with Alex Royer and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Grumpy Chef was born in 2020 during the pandemic. While cooking at home during quarantine my partner Abdul and I began exploring different kitchen tools. In doing so, we found so much about them that we didn’t like. From product design, ergonomics and quality – we thought why not create a brand doing things completely differently in kitchenware. Combining quality, improved ergonomics and unique presentation – we knew we could bring something new to kitchenware.
Our mission is to provide affordable, high quality kitchenware items to our customers.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We have designed and engineered our products to the minutia. The ergonomics, reliability and quality of our products are supreme. For the steel grade used in our knives, balancing sharpness and sharpening ability – we bring an affordable and high quality item to the market. Our magnetic holders, specifically designed for style and function, not taking up too much room but making for a beautiful statement piece in the home. We pride ourselves on excellent craftsmanship and reliability – that also compliments the modern kitchen aesthetic.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
My co-founder and I met through a mutual friend, we all worked out at the same gym. Adbul, was highly motivated and interested in starting his own company. We grew a friendship and shared our passion for entrepreneurship. We believed that apparel would be a great first step, We started there, and learned the nuances of e-commerce. I think navigating the trials of starting a new business helped us forge a truly strong friendship. That foundation allowed us to bring our skills into a new arena, kitchenware, with Grumpy Chef.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for us has been through working with influencers. Finding enthusiastic and motivated individuals who want to help spread our story has been the most rewarding experience.
