We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Finnbar Walsh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Finnbar, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Throughout most of my life sport was the central focus for what I wanted as a career. As I matured and gained my own conscious, durning my final year of school I started to realise that this wasn’t what I wanted in life and felt more of an urge to express myself, except I hadn’t found exactly what that was yet. I then went travelling for 6 months on my own through Europe and it wasn’t until the back end of my trip that I felt this intrinsic pull to try Acting and ever since then I haven’t looked back. I believe it was through taking risk and becoming independent this discovery was made.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have gained lots of inspiration and knowledge in my craft through watching the greats such as Marlon Brando, Gary Oldman and Mathew McConaughey. These actors bring such freedom and authenticity to the screen and it inspires me to do the same with my performance. I try to create as much connection and curiosity with my performance as possible so that I am able to bring something that is not only true and authentic but also very interesting to watch.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn was not being so critical and analytical of my work. It’s so easy for our minds to try and find perfection in acting and art, when in reality there is no such thing and all that does is create a block in being able to produce a more free and authentic version of the character. This has definitely been one of the bigger lesson I’ve had to understand to and unlearn to becoming not only a better actor but a better version of myself.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to entertain and create an escape for people. To make people feel inspired. To produce the most captivating experience when working. To be able to express myself fully and connect with others is a massive part of why I act.
