We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kate O’riley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kate thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The inspiration for Line & Label came to me after 13 years of working with designers in NYC. I felt ready to take the leap and create something of my own. At first, I was torn between launching a collection to wholesale or opening a boutique where I could feature my designs alongside other talented creators. The idea of curating a store felt like a less risky, more exciting path. As I brainstormed names for this new venture, I ran into the usual problem—everything I loved was already taken. Then, while flipping through a thesaurus, I stumbled upon the perfect words: “line” and “label.” It clicked—my collection, my line, showcased alongside other incredible labels. Line & Label was born.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve always been drawn to design and self-expression, and my journey into the fashion world began after working with some incredible designers in NYC. Throughout those years, I absorbed everything I could—techniques, styles, and the intricacies of the fashion business. But I knew that my path wasn’t just to help bring someone else’s vision to life; it was time for me to create something uniquely my own. That spark of inspiration led me to found Line & Label.
At the heart of what I do is the belief that fashion isn’t just about clothing—it’s about storytelling. My store showcases my own line, but it’s also a curated space for other designers who share that same creative ethos. I wanted to build a platform where design isn’t just sold, but where it’s celebrated. Whether through a carefully crafted garment or a beautifully curated shopping experience, my goal is to offer something more than just products; I want to inspire.
I think what sets Line & Label apart is this commitment to not just creating beautiful things, but fostering a deeper connection between art, design, and the people who wear it. Every designer featured in my store shares that same passion for originality and quality. I’m particularly proud of how my store has evolved into a space where creativity is at the core.
For potential clients or followers, I want them to know that Line & Label is about more than just the fashion—I’ve worked hard to bring together pieces that are not only unique but also meaningful. Every piece you find in my store has been thoughtfully selected or designed to inspire the wearer and help them express their own personal style in a way that feels authentic. This is a place where creativity is the fabric that binds everything together.
What I’m most proud of is the journey itself—the constant evolution of my brand, and the community of creators and customers who support it. For me, fashion isn’t a trend; it’s a self expression. That’s what Line & Label is all about: a space for the bold, the original, and the inspired.

Any advice for managing a team?
I’ve learned a lot from past experiences about what works in keeping morale high. For me, transparency is key. I make sure my team understands the reasons behind my business decisions, and I actively seek their input on designs and merchandising. Different perspectives only make the company stronger, and I believe it’s a missed opportunity for leaders to not value their employees’ ideas. By fostering open communication and offering mentorship, I keep morale high. I also try to align responsibilities with their personal interests, so they feel more engaged and motivated in their work.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I funded my business through a combination of personal savings, a credit union loan, business credit cards, and part-time work during the first year to ensure consistent cash flow.
