We were lucky to catch up with Kylie Bree Peinado recently and have shared our conversation below.
KYLIE BREE, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
I picked up a camera with the intentions of becoming a photographer after I had my first birth daughter. I had a friend that was a photographer and I loved seeing her work, and I thought to myself, I want to do that, too.
That was in 2008. From there, while I was pregnant with my second birth daughter, I decided to get a certificate of professional photography. I dabbled in a lot of different genres after that. I even did an internship as a wedding photographer for one summer.
It was after photographing my bonus-daughter giving birth in 2018 that I found my calling, though. She asked me to be there for support, and I brought my camera along just in case. I had never felt such a high! I went home and Googled “birth photography” and found out there is actually a market for it, and one that’s really big in the Denver area! I jumped in and never looked back!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Kylie of Kylie Bree Photography! I live in Firestone, Colorado with my husband, 3 of our 4 daughters, and our twin boys. Our oldest daughter lives nearby with her hubby and two daughters, too. Our house is loud and chaotic, and even when I am stressed and overstimulated to the max, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Family is at the very core of everything I do, and that definitely transfers over to my business and my photography. It fills my cup to be able to beautifully document the season of becoming a mother and growing a family for the people I work with. I want to make my pregnant clients feel like the gorgeous goddesses I see them as. I want to document all the details of the day their baby is born because I know it will always be one of the best days of their lives. I want to memorialize their squishy newborn and the way their little body fits in their arms. And I want to be there capturing milestones and memories as they grow. I love the journey!
I’d like to think that I offer my clients a very laid back, stress free experience. I can help bring calm to the chaos, or fun and silliness to the shy, sometimes at the same time! I offer a selection of dresses for my maternity clients to take the burden of shopping off of them. I custom design an album for all of my birth clients so that they can focus on taking care of themselves and their new baby. I really strive to make every interaction simple and easy, because I know from experience that motherhood isn’t always simple or easy.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Having relationships with other photographers has been so empowering for me. I am part of a circle of photographers and doulas that strongly believe in community over competition, We all have something unique to offer, even if our photography style is similar or we’re in the same genre. Being a solo photographer gets a little lonely, so having friends I can talk to and bounce ideas off of that get it is an invaluable resource.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I really had to unlearn my tendency to lean towards perfectionism. I was holding myself back by telling myself I couldn’t do something until I completely mastered it and had it just right. And comparison can really bring you down in this industry if you let it! But done is better than perfect most of the time! I’ve really had to embrace kind of just jumping in and figuring things out as I go as a business owner and as an artist.
