We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Abiyeksa Gathan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Abiyeksa below.
Hi Abiyeksa, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
The first time I earned money from my creative work was when I was 15. I loved drawing, especially portraits, and spent most of my free time improving my skills. One day, a friend asked me to draw her favorite character. I worked on it carefully, making sure to capture every detail she described. When I showed her the finished piece, she was so happy and paid me $40 for it. That was my first commission, and it made me realize how much I enjoyed creating art for others. It also motivated me to keep drawing and exploring more opportunities to sell my work

Abiyeksa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Abiyeksa, I’m 17 years old and a young artist who focuses on portrait drawings. I started drawing during the COVID pandemic and began selling my work at 15.
What makes me different is my attention to detail and how I make each piece personal for the client.
Working with people has its challenges—like dealing with impatience or unclear requests—but I’ve learned to stay professional and deliver quality work.
I’m proud of how much I’ve grown but want people to know I’m still exploring.
Drawing is just a step in my journey, and I’m open to discovering new passions..

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is using my creativity to make money. It’s not like traditional work—you can create something from your mind, sell it, and earn from your passion. But it’s not always easy. Creativity doesn’t come every day

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal so far has been to create art and enjoy the process. Drawing and selling portraits isn’t my main focus—it’s more of a side hustle for me. I’m good at it, but I don’t see it as a full-time career. I’m not interested in sitting for hours drawing someone’s specific request when I know I can explore other opportunities. Art is a hobby I enjoy, but my bigger goal is to use my creativity in future projects, whatever those may be. I’m open to how my creative abilities can fit into my next venture.
