We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Penelope Pendragon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Penelope below.
Penelope, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The Whimsical WiSH Wagon is by far, the most meaningful and magical project I’ve ever created.
I first saw what was to become the WiSH Wagon on the Las Vegas Strip. It was a shopping kiosk at a mall selling all things Egyptian from scarves to scarabs. I recall saying “That seems more like a fairy gypsy wagon than an Egyptian store.” I didn’t think about it again until it appeared in my boyfriend’s neighbor’s driveway.
The neighbor explained it was a hand made, one of a kind piece of art built in Israel to be a retail kiosk. It cost $70,000 to make. He was willing to sell it to me for $30,000 declaring that, “The shipping cost that much!” At the time I was a single mom with an upstanding career who had no reason to purchase a fancy lawn ornament for 30k, despite it’s unique beauty and energetic pull.
The following year I broke my arm. lost my job, couldn’t get a job because of my broken arm and thus, started my own business. Shortly thereafter, I was diagnosed with cancer as a single mom. I had a new business so I was without insurance. I lost my house, my car and the majority of my possessions – even my son had to live with his abusive father. I would have lost that beautiful kiosk too.
About a year after beating the cancer, he offered it again for 18k. Again, I turned it down… I needed to rebuild my life.
After moving across town, I would occasionally drive past his house, stare longingly at the kiosk and state “That’s mine. I don’t know what I’m going to do with it, or how I’m going to get it, but that’s mine.” I truly felt it had meaning in my life, though that meaning had yet to be revealed.
Approximately seven years from the time I first saw it on the Vegas Strip. After he had been offered various sums of money for it, but demanding more and chasing the prospective buyers away, he again called up the boyfriend asking, “Does she still want it?” The boyfriend answered “Yes, I believe so.” He replied, “Then come get it out of my (explicative) front yard!”
I immediately put it on a trailer and tried making it into a traveling sales kiosk to sell my fun, funky, fantasy art creations at festivals, but it was way too big of a haul and I wasn’t making the money I needed to justify the fuel so I parked it in my friend’s yard till I figured out what I should do with it.
That’s when things got really interesting. For the next few years, everything fell together – even though it looked like everything was falling apart.
In one year’s time, I amicably ended a 9 year relationship with the boyfriend which caused me to lose my job as he was my boss at the time. Due to that, and the creative loan structure of the 2009 housing crash, my home went into foreclosure. I let it go happily because my son had enlisted in the Air Force so I didn’t need the big house or the big house payment anyway. I also lost 100lbs and got into the best shape of my life. I moved into an old motorhome I bought off Craigslist and hit the road with my three big hairy dogs with my only explaination being “I’m going on a three year journey.” I didn’t know what I was supposed to be doing, all I knew is that I was on a “three year journey”.
At the end of the second year, my friends who were housing the kiosk said they needed it moved. I didn’t know what to do with it, so I sat inside it and meditated with the question, “What is your purpose?”
For the next several months, I was spewing out the most introspective, spiritually significant rhymes that I didn’t know were inside me. I created storylines and designs for how to presents all this wondrous information. WiSH became an acronym (What is Stated, Happens!), LOVE became an acronym (Lifting Of Vibrational Energy). PEACE, LiFE, BLiSS and HOPE… all acronyms – that made sense – and had full explanatory dialogue – all coming out in rhyme. I wrote them down or recorded them as fast as I could while I was in this flow of downloading information.
It was absolutely clear that this kiosk was “The Whimsical WiSH Wagon” and it was here to help empower the next generations in the most MaGiCal way. (MaGiC – Me and Greatness in Creation)
I’ve been touring to festivals, faires, schools and shelters through the Western US since 2012. I have gathered hundreds of thousands of WiSHes and inspired hundreds of thousands of “kids” (Ages 8-88) with the Whimsical WiSH Wagon, a stage show and three books.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Penelope Pendragon, often referred to as, “The WiSHing Faery”. I have a robust imagination paired with a solid understanding of the power of positive thinking and personal energy. With these traits, I “edu-tain” children (ages 4-104) with Seussian style and Faery flair. My whimsical ways and amazing association of acronyms keep both children and adults entertained as I educate on Feeding Faeries (positive thinking), Starving Goblins (negative thinking) and how to get WiSHes to come true in the best possible way (manifestation). (WiSH = What is Stated, Happens!)
My presentations are about personal energy and how to shift your energy mindset through mindfulness that leads to manifestation. My art is created almost entirely with reclaimed materials.
I’ve been traveling around the Western US since 2012, performing from SanDiego to Seattle while offering tours through a magical solar powered and upcycled art structure called the “Whimsical WiSH Wagon”.
Inside the WiSH Wagon it is certain you’ll find, magical things of more than one kind. If you read the walls, it will teach you what to do to get your best WiSHes to keep coming true. “Kids”, of all ages, enjoy finding Faeries in the Faery Habitat, stating three things they love about themselves in the Magic Mirror, putting their WiSH in the WiSHing Basket and whispering their WiSH into the Wishing Portal.
These efforts are supported by a 501c3 corporation.
The next step is a video series, possibly a television fantasy adventure and eventually a trilogy of movies.
I’ve only just begun.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I’d like to urge society – creative or not – patronize your local artists.
Sadly so often we creatives – particularly the part timers. who have creative skills, but a full time job in another arena – will recognize someone else’s product or idea as something that they, themselves, can create. Yes, you can create it… but will you? And if you do, how much time, energy and effort will you put into making it?
Based on your current income, the time and effort you put into gathering supplies, setting up the space, creating the item and cleaning up the space could cost you 3x more than purchasing the item from a local artist. This also helps boost the economy – and don’t even get me started about utilizing the law of circulation.
Non-creatives will often like the works of art, but opt to purchase the cheap replicas at the malls to save a few bucks and these days, AI is taking liberties with works of passion and love that damage the creative ecosystem more than they can imagine. It is a very disturbing trend.
Buy art – real art – made by real artists.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In 2019, I created an amazing art installation at the Age of Chivalry Renaissance Festival in Las Vegas, NV called The Enchanted Forest Experience. It was so spectacular it garnered the attention of a local upscale strip mall who wanted to put it into one of their empty spaces to get more foot traffic and boost their social media.
We aimed at the holidays for a trial run, but the two spaces that were ready to build in, leased out – both had been empty for over 18 months. We slated move in for April in another spot and soon found out the current tenant couldn’t move out until mid-summer. At that point the project was put on a temporary hold until a better space was found.
Then there was a pandemic.
I hadn’t stored away the forest properly for a two year hiatus and many other harmful things happened through the pandemic that cause 80% of the Enchanted Forest decor to be destroyed.
In 2021 and 2022, we used what was left and made a fun area for performers at the Renaissance Festival.
In 2023, we had enough rebuilt to make a new Enchanted Forest Experience and it was a fabulous success. The Enchanted Forest Experience is now one of the most popular attractions at the Age of Chivalry that boast up to 65,000 attendees over a three day weekend.
As for the Enchanted Forest Experience as a permanent and growing art installation, in 2022, the mall was sold and the new corporation that owns it has not responded to my requests for review. BUT – now I’m working as the Creative Director for a new fantasy festival in Washington State called The Realms Unknown. This festival takes up 15 acres of a Golf Course on the Lewis River. I’m honored to be a part of its growth and development.
