We were lucky to catch up with Adaora Nwangwu recently and have shared our conversation below.
Adaora, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
My name is Adaora Nwangwu and I am a multi-hyphenate creative based in Atlanta. Right now, I’m focused on transitioning into the Product Design field while making User Generated Content (UGC).
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Adaora Nwangwu and I am a creative with visual art, media & content creation background transitioning into the Product Design field. I’m passionate about learning about people, and their needs as well as building great products that make their lives easier. On the side, I create User Generated Content (UGC) on TikTok & YouTube and want to get into the commercial modeling industry. I’m currently based in Atlanta, Georgia.
I help lead a community of young people called BLW Oasis. We’re a worldwide youth capacity development organization whose mission is to put Christian values and principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirits, minds, and bodies for all. We execute these programs, particularly in campus communities around the world.
Guided by our core values of leadership, education, and responsibility, BLW is committed to giving youths of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life the opportunity to reach their full potential with dignity.
I recently received a Women in Tech Scholarship from Google ($10,000) to finish up my Master’s degree at Savannah College of Art and Design and can proudly say it was because of my access to this community. Being around such inspiring and like-minded people reminds me and a lot of others to always strive for the best and encourage the people around you to do so as well. I’m currently based in the Atlanta chapter. We’re always planning events for the community and are currently looking for more innovative ways to expand, thrive and grow.
I’m also currently 1 of 18 budding product designers selected to join the Leads by Design fellowship – a transformative and tailored program designed to help accelerate its fellows’ Product Design careers.
So far, I’ve honed product design skills, explored new growth opportunities, and boosted creative confidence in a structured, supportive, and collaborative environment.
It’s been a good run for me so far and I’m excited to see the continuous growth and success the future has in store.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was fear. Growing up, I had some tendencies to be very anxious about my future as I lived in Nigeria, and the prospects of a creative making it on the scale I wanted to were little to none and would require much more effort than it was worth. I was also one of the few that had decided to take my creative gifts seriously. I didn’t know much and I didn’t have access to resources at the time so it was hard not to be afraid of the unknown. But I followed my gut feeling and trusted that God wanted me to do something with this gift He had given me, I just didn’t know what it looked like yet. I was blessed to have supportive parents who believed in my potential and supported me the best way they knew how to. Thankfully, social media and tech advanced greatly as I was in college and became more popular. I discovered that I could be a Product Designer with all the skills I have acquired as well as A User Generated Content Creator to earn a good income.
When it comes to achieving things, a lot of people are driven by vision, others by fear. I’m happy to say that I am now driven by vision and choose to believe in God and the fact that He will always provide a way especially when things seem to be stuck.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think the most rewarding part of being an artist or creative is getting to inspire others to tap into their creative potential. I believe creatives rub off of each other’s creative energy to produce even better work than they would have individually.
Having people believe in, depend on and look up to me has inspired me to strive to be the best version of myself daily and to continue to maximize my potential.
