Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mary King. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
MARY, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I had moved from Kansas to Colorado and I needed direction. I was feeling a little lost and I decided to ask my spirit guides for help. I started my spiritual awakening about 5 years ago, So when I need advice I seek help from my Spirit team. I remember asking them if I should start making candles, I asked them to show me a specific sign. I made this a symbol that I wouldn’t see regularly. I asked them to show me an upside down heart if I was supposed to start making candles, my spirit teams normally shows me signs within 2 hours to 2 days. The next day I decided to clean out my storage closet and I found a tote that I was looking for since the move. I opened it up and found a tarot book and lo and behold there on the book was a small upside down heart. I knew it was my sign.
MARY, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Every candle is made with love and positive energy, with every purchase the customer receives a little Thank you gift of Crystal pebbles that were cleansed under a full moon. Here at Kings3Candles all the candles are made of Soy. We currently I have 6 different fragrances and wax melts. I am looking to expand in the future.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Starting a small business has been challenging at times, There were times I started to double guess myself, I had to learn everything about Candles, I literally had to start from the ground up b/c I knew absolutely nothing about candles. I had to research the different Wax’s, Fragrances, Wick sizes, Vessels, temperatures for mixing the fragrances and then the temps to pour. There was more to it that just heating up wax and pouring it. Lots of testing and trial and errors. Some candles had better throws than others. I would order labels or jars and they ended up being the wrong size or the lids wouldn’t fit, I wanted to throw in the towel a few times, at times it felt like everything was falling apart at once. Starting a business however large or small is scary, taking risks are scary. I just stayed focused and pressed on, I remembered what my momma always said “It’s a bad day, Not a bad life” that little phrase helped me a lot.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I have had amazing friends and family help support me. Tiktok, Instagram and even Facebook have been a great source of referrals and getting new customers. Every time someone tags me in a post and they express how great my candles smell and how much they love them it really warms my heart. I am so honored that they gave me a chance. There are so many candle companies out there and to know they love me and keep coming back means the world to me.
