We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Leemor Aizenberg a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Leemor, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
We are personally a mom & daughter duo, and it has been working incredibly for us since we opened! My mom is the biggest inspiration for me & her hard work is what drives me to strive for more each & every day. The good thing about working together as a family is that she listens to me, and also knows how to calm me down when I get a little anxious / overwhelmed. She’s had her own businesses in the past so she really makes the best business partner.

Leemor, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Leemor Aizenberg, and I started Boards & Bordeaux over 4 years ago during the pandemic. It has been a privilege watching the business grow, and how hard work and perseverance takes you so far. There are so many aspects in our business that sets us apart, including how we only source the best & finest ingredients for our cheese boards, and our customer service is unmatched. I truly believe that good quality product will keep people coming back & ordering time & time again. I’m so proud to see how the business grew and I’m so excited for where the future will take us.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
For the first four years of Boards & Bordeaux I was still working in my full time sales job, as it was what was paying my mortgage & all my bills. I struggled a lot with my mental health & juggling all of my tasks, but I knew my greater vision for my business. I recently took the leap of going full time in Boards & Bordeaux, and I know with hard work and being fully into the business, my dreams will come true. I had to make life changes & sacrifices to go full time, but doing what you love for work is a true win in life.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The first thing that comes to mind when I think about a lesson that I had to unlearn was having imposter syndrome. Due to my age and my lack of history in the culinary world, I felt like I was behind or didn’t know as much as others. There were many moments of uncertainty and doubt that I had to teach myself to get over in order to succeed and truly thrive in my own business. I had to learn from my mistakes and learn not to compare myself to others. We are each on our own journey and path, and I had to learn how to have confidence that my journey is meant to be.
