We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Juliette Jave a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Juliette thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I aspire to leave behind a legacy rooted in integrity, strength, beauty, intelligence, and kindness. My hope is to be remembered not just for my creativity but for my fairness and honesty in everything I do. From a business perspective, I want to be seen as a strategic, influential power player and nail educator. I hope the techniques and knowledge I share continue to shape and inspire the industry long after I’m gone.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Nail Artist based in Towson, Maryland, with a deep appreciation for the art and creativity that nails bring. I specialize in Gel-X and Acrylic nails, offering a range of styles that give my clients a sense of confidence and joy. I take pride in making people feel empowered and happy through my work, and I’m passionate about delivering beautiful results.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’m actively working on building my audience on Instagram and TikTok, but I always recommend creating authentic content tailored specifically to your target audience. This helps attract your ideal customer. I’ve never been focused on having a high follower count with low engagement—quality over quantity has always been my priority.
So far, I’ve grown my following primarily through word-of-mouth and participating in in-person marketing events, like the @bmoregirly pop-up shop and various events at Morgan State University. My goal has always been for my followers to be genuine clients. However, in today’s digital landscape, attention is a form of currency, and leveraging it effectively is crucial for any business’s online success.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I balanced doing nails alongside two 9-to-5 jobs until the beginning of this year. There’s often a narrative that you should quit your day job to focus solely on your side hustle to make it profitable, but in reality, that approach can be overwhelming and unsustainable. You need sufficient capital to support yourself and your business. My advice is to use your 9-to-5 to fund your passion until you’re truly ready to transition.
If possible, consider working from home or finding a job that doesn’t demand too much of your time and energy. This way, you can prioritize your passion while maintaining financial stability.
