We were lucky to catch up with Lance-O recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lance-O, thanks for joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
We have been able to earn a full time living from our creative work most of our life. We did it by being adaptable and catering to people’s needs and wants within reggae muzik. We basically created most of our own outlets and those braught the business with us. We started out in radio in 1985 and immediately became a DJ. We always played good muzik then we learned how to mix the muzik properly so we could keep the vibe going. Radio exposed us to a larger audience. We definitely could have sped up the process had we been a bit more of a risk taker and invested in ourself more. We were very humble and did not realize how popular we were.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Well for those who do not know us, we are Lance-O on the Radio of Kulcha Shok Muzik. We are a reggae DJ & Int’l MC. We host & Dj at many of the major US reggae festivals and shows throughout Florida and the US. We started out in college by starting a college radio station. From there we moved home to Miami to work at the US’s only all 24 hr Caribbean radio station, where we took AM radio with 500 watts to to 5 in the market. We just knew how to have fun on the radio and we played alot of new muzik that could not be heard anywhere else. We had a source before everyone to get the mew muzik first and people loved that. This and being a white American at an all Caribbean station both help me stand apart from the crowd. We are most proud of when we moved on to a major radio station in the Miami/Ft Lauderdale radio market and were breaking reggae & dancehall records that still stand up to time today.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
of course and that is to get reggae muzik to the highest point of success as we can. To get reggae muzik out to the masses and the mainstream in anyway we can.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a reggae DJ & MC, is when you are being yourself and doing your thing and people appreciate what you do to the fullest. No feeling like it in the world.
