Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel Devereux
Hi Joel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was always creative from a young age and found myself drawing & painting all throughout my school years. I picked up a camera towards the end of school and started producing burlesque shows in my final year of university (2013). We needed poster images so I had a red hot go at taking some images and the rest was history. I have worn many creative hats over the past decade working in the arts & entertainment industries. My adaptability in the creative scene has allowed me to work in a number of different worlds; namely photography, burlesque, drag, theatre, creative design, music, hospitality, events, graphic design and marketing. My unique skillset and familiarity in the wider entertainment industry has also allowed me to work with many notable artists, international celebrities, and entertainment companies.
I’m grateful that my work allows me to showcase the amazing artists around me, and contribute to the ever-changing and vibrate creative landscape of Australia. My photography work has been featured & published across the world.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think learning to let go is a big part of surviving in the arts. It never hurts to try things but holding onto ideas that no longer serve you can really damage your creative output. Kill your darlings, quit your job, change it up! Every time I’ve made a big change it has always been for the better, for the person I am in the moment. Also learning not to speculate what people will think of your decisions. I do believe people are more supportive than note, and I always say don’t take criticism from someone you wouldn’t take advice from.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m known for my unique style of creative portraiture and promotional photography in the worlds of burlesque, drag, theatre, circus and other fringe art forms. Truly what motivates me are the big personalities and interesting people I get to work with. Photography is less of a technical job and more of a people-oriented position in my experience. Making people feel comfortable and confident in front of a camera is a real skill, and having been on the other side a few times myself I know how important this is to the art. Day to day, my job is photographing, admin, hours of photo sorting and retouching.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
