Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesenia Wright
Jesenia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey started with my own lived experiences. Growing up in poverty with a mother who struggled with mental health and substance abuse, I saw firsthand the challenges that come with those hardships. That early exposure shaped my passion for helping others.
I pursued a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice, but my heart led me to social work, where I earned my Master’s and became a Licensed Master Social Worker. In 2016, I founded GivingsCloset Inc., a donation-based clothing closet, as a way to give back to the community. Over the years, I’ve worked with schools, developed mental health workshops, and now oversee a school-based mental health program, serving 13 schools with over 30 employees.
My childhood journey and professional experiences have driven me to empower others, particularly those facing the same challenges I once did. It’s been a rewarding journey, and I’m always seeking new ways to create change.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path to where I am today has been anything but smooth. Growing up in poverty and witnessing my mother’s struggles with mental health and substance abuse shaped my understanding of the challenges many people face. While these experiences gave me empathy and purpose, they also left emotional scars that I’ve worked hard to heal—healing is an ongoing journey. Balancing my mental well-being while pursuing my education was one of the toughest challenges I’ve faced.
Building GivingsCloset and stepping into leadership roles came with its own set of hurdles. Gaining funding, securing resources, and earning community trust were uphill battles—some of which I am still navigating today. Leading a school-based mental health program across 13 schools has been both rewarding and demanding, requiring me to balance the complexities of managing a large team while ensuring high-quality services.
Every challenge I’ve faced has taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of growth, both personally and professionally. The journey isn’t easy, but it’s always worth it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m the founder and CEO of GivingsCloset Inc., a donation-based clothing closet that I started in 2016. We provide free clothing and essentials to individuals and families in need, with a focus on dignity and compassion. It started as a way to give back to my community, and over the years, it’s grown into a valuable resource for those who are facing economic hardship, especially students and families.
I specialize in mental health advocacy, youth empowerment, and community engagement. What sets me apart is the personal connection I have to my work. Having grown up in a challenging environment, I understand firsthand the importance of mental health support and basic needs. This personal experience allows me to connect deeply with the communities I serve.
I’m most proud of GivingsCloset. Knowing that we’ve been able to help countless families in a meaningful way is incredibly rewarding. What sets GivingsCloset apart is our approach—we don’t just hand out clothes; we ensure that every person who walks through our doors is treated with respect and care. It’s about restoring dignity and offering hope, which has always been at the core of everything I do.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
There are a variety of resources that I tap into which include
Therapy and Journaling: Therapy has been a crucial part of my mental health journey. It provides me with the tools and space to process my emotions, reflect on my experiences, and grow. I also make it a habit to journal regularly. Writing down my thoughts helps me sort through emotions, set goals, and reflect on my progress. It’s a therapeutic practice that keeps me focused and intentional.
Apps: I use the **Calm** for mindfulness and meditation. They help me stay centered, especially on hectic days.
These resources, combined with a commitment to self-care and reflection, help me maintain balance, drive, and resilience in my personal life and work.
