Today we’d like to introduce you to Ethan White
Hi Ethan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Ethan White. I’m 24, a Leo, and a life path 1 in numerology. I’m from Milwaukee, Wisconsin (and no, I’m not a cheesehead, contrary to popular belief). I’ve been a tarot reader since January 2018, having discovered tarot while watching YouTube videos in late 2017. Tarot instantly changed my life, and I felt a deep connection with the practice. I never expected this to happen, as I grew up as a devout atheist, so tarot definitely shook up my entire worldview regarding spirituality. While I’m still not religious (and have nothing against religion), I do have my own spiritual life that works for me.
I also create other types of content, and I’m currently working on becoming a social media manager. I have a lot of fire in my natal chart, so I like to start different ventures. Sometimes it takes me a while to find my footing in a particular venture, but slow burns are always better. People who rise quickly often crash just as fast. Failures are great learning opportunities, so don’t stay down when you fall—get back up and learn from your mistakes.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The tarot and spirituality field is oversaturated right now. It can be really hard to differentiate yourself in the industry, but everyone has a specific niche they can tap into. Healthy competition can exist, but getting too wrapped up in it is unnecessary. At the same time, you need to embrace certain trends to get your business seen, especially if you’re operating mainly or exclusively online. I do almost all of my readings online, so I have to engage with the social media algorithms at times. That means, at times, I have to embrace dreaded social media trends. However, even then, you can still add your unique touch to certain social media trends. For example, you could do a tarot reading on TikTok, and incorporate a popular TikTok sound into the video. Do something unique to catch people’s attention. A little shock value is okay, but don’t go over the top—you don’t want to come off as desperate. Certain pop stars did enough of that this year!!!
Perfectionism is a significant struggle for me. I care deeply about my work, but sometimes I get too caught up in making things perfect, especially regarding marketing. Yes, it’s important for things to be presentable, but in reality, the readings are the most crucial element of my business, not the packaging or aesthetics. Great content will shine regardless, as long as it’s authentic.
I’m also a full-time college student, so I have to balance college, tarot, and other ventures. It’s chaotic a lot of the time, but I’m good at working in those conditions. I’ve recently found a solid balance in my life. There’s still room for improvement, but I’ve made significant progress in that area.
Discipline is essential if you want to be a freelancer or run your own business. Some days, you won’t want to do it, but you have to if you want to pay the bills. You need to hold yourself accountable; if you can’t, then this line of work isn’t for you. Also, if your business is your hobby, you must anticipate that it won’t feel like one 24/7. Turning something into a job can dampen the passion. However, I still feel passionate about my craft 95% of the time, though there will be days when it doesn’t feel like a hobby.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I didn’t start doing tarot professionally until May 2018. It was a slow build for my business, and in some ways, I’m still building it years later. I’ve gone through many different phases and “eras,” but now I feel like I’m really where I want to be. I have a solid foundation that I’ve been crafting for years. While there’s still room to grow, I’m super happy with the progress I’ve made so far. I’m excited to see where I’ll be in 6 months even. The future is exciting, but I still try to stay present-minded, tomorrow is never promised, so I aim to soak up every moment of the day.
Before tarot, I was always (and still am) into entertainment. I started making YouTube videos in 2009, and since then, I’ve been passionate about entertainment, content creation, and social media. I’m currently in college for marketing, and I’m aiming to be a social media manager in the future. I still love entertainment, so I’ve been working on incorporating it into my tarot business.
Around 2020, I decided that my mission with my business was to combine entertainment and spirituality. I still do serious readings, of course, but I enjoy entertaining, and I wanted to incorporate that into my business. I’ve even done in-character readings (yes, they’re actual readings while I’m in character). I want to expand on that concept going forward, but I keep in mind that tarot is fundamentally about spirituality and clarity, and I strive to keep that as the main focus. Both elements can coexist, and my business is proof of that.
Tarot has been a blessing in my life. I’ve met so many amazing people and clients through this practice. I’ve also received some incredible opportunities. I love that I get to help people in a unique way that works for both my clients and I.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I really dislike when readers take advantage of their clients. For example, some clients become addicted to tarot readings, and I notice some readers enable that to make extra money, which I find gross. We are meant to help people and provide clarity, not add more turmoil to someone’s life.
I also dislike when readers overcharge for readings and fail to deliver a quality service. Most of my readings are very affordable, but I do offer some more expensive options. With those pricier readings you definitely get your money’s worth (my clients can attest to that). It’s all about an equal give and take, so if you charge a lot, your service must be worthwhile.
I enjoy creating astrology memes. I’m not a professional astrologer, but I love making fun astrology memes. I’m still learning when it comes to astrology, but it’s just for fun. I’ve connected with many people through my memes. I also create tarot memes, some of which can get very niche and specific, but I always find myself laughing at them.
I appreciate readers who are honest. You can be honest without being mean, but honesty in a reading is VERY important. I want to know the truth; don’t just tell me what I want to hear (unless that’s actually the truth). I tend to be very honest in my readings, and my clients have complimented that. The honest approach is like quickly ripping off a Band-Aid—it’s better to get the pain over with. Overall, most of my readings are joyous and positive. I aim to help guide my clients to more peace in their life, and to attain that sometimes you have to address the negatives. In the end though it’s very worth it.
