We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amy Taylor . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amy below.
Amy , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Honestly, now 10 years into my profession as a photographer, I started to lose my passion. Life Happened so quickly and before I knew it, my fire was out. I was TIRED. Our personal lives play a big factor in how much drive we have and sometimes damage flows into the career we’ve built for ourselves. I had been in the same enviroment., around the same people and life just wasn’t adding up anymore and neither was picking up a camera. I just wanted my life back. I sold my house in a day without a realtor, packed up my 4 kids alone and hit the next big city over. I was sure this was the next right move. Sure enough, the offer to start shooting for a record label, some top artists, & magazines covers came into the light. I was grateful and willing with the next level but still something wasn’t igniting my fire I was once had. I was longing for adventure. I just wanted peace with my kids. It’s the reason I started in the first place. I geared up for the road, loaded my kids & my camera up again, destination unknown. I had worked the last decade in so many situations where I missed “moments” of my own children’s lives. All while capturing everyone else. I was put in situations to over book myself, to run myself as far as I could stretch, NOT due to my own business failures but an outside source was sucking me dry and I had no idea before it was too late. I took a risk on change. Backing off, getting out, and changing everything. I knew if I didn’t, I wouldn’t continue to thrive. I now am full time, roadschooling, picking up the camera again with a different point of view. Nurture yourself. Pause and go back if you need to. I never imagined a “break” like this could change my life and bring me back stronger than ever.

Amy , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Amy Taylor, full time photographer and mother of 4. I’ve specialized in weddings, families, seniors, editorial, & couples over the last ten years. I thrive on taking candid shots to tell the perfect story. I’ve offered mentoring to women from beginners to experienced photographers.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
If there is any words of advice or lesson to learn… don’t be afraid to step away for awhile. If it means not draining the last bit of creativity out of yourself. Take the time to rebuild, relearn the market, reset and relearn why you started in the first place. Reach out to mentors that you feel inspire you. Even if you learn ONE thing different in your industry, it may make a world of difference.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission now is tightly focused on balancing personal life with my career. My goals are to bring the right type of clients into my element through photography. I want to see real, authentic moments passed between one another. My own children have really expressed a lot over this last little season and it’s so fun to watch and re photograph at this stage. They are every bit of what I’m chasing in this life. I’ve now turned into another industry into self healing that will launch soon. Can’t wait to share.
