Today we’d like to introduce you to Mydreamsisvivid
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
So I’m Mydreamsisvivid, and I started producing at the age of 13 in Baltimore, Maryland, where I was born and raised. Through music being played 24/7 in my home, I learned to value its power and range. Through in-depth studying at my alma mater, Bowie State University, I was able to solidify that music was something I could seriously pursue and something I want to do consistently for the rest of my life. I also feel collaboration has gotten me to where I am, whether I was directly and extensively working with someone like my longtime collaborator and friend Kenzo Cole, or classmates I met in college—where the collaborations never saw the light of day—I just learned so much by being in the presence of other creatives. Curiosity also plays a huge part in my story. I remember playing instruments all throughout grade school, and it wasn’t that I was necessarily obsessed with playing them; I was just curious about how to play and what I could do with them. Also, it was encouraged by my mom. I feel like a huge part of my story now is realizing that it’s not just the music that fuels the music—and vice versa. You have to promote your work, plan it, and explore other mediums that fuel the music-making (i.e., DJing, creative direction).
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been smooth at all. I’m just thankful to be in tune with God’s plan over any obstacle that comes my way. One of the earliest obstacles was moving past any naysayers and people who thought I was dreaming too big, given I’ve always had a free-spirited, creative way of thinking. Another challenge was accepting that I can—and want to—do music full time. You know, growing up where I did, it’s not easily accepted to be a full-time creative, so it takes a lot of determination and courage to continue pursuing what you want to do. Something I’m still learning is the difference between the music industry and the music itself. It’s like, the moment between making and finishing the music and putting it out into the world, it becomes a whole other thing. It’s interesting
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a producer and DJ, and my focus is on creating music that blends genres and evokes emotion. My first project, A Vivid World Vol. 1: The Net, is out now, and I’m most proud of it. This project stands out because it’s different from anything else out there right now, while still being reminiscent of some of my favorite hip-hop and R&B influences. I believe what sets me apart is my ability to combine nostalgia with innovation, I feel like my production is gonna make you wanna know more about it
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I had a big laugh and was talkative around people I knew well, but very quiet and reserved around those I didn’t. I was observant and creative, always walking to the beat of my own drum and feeling self-assured in who I was. Music was a constant in my life, and I was fascinated by technology—gadgets like the iPod and iPod Touch, or any toy that revolved around music and recording. I spent a lot of time on Myspace, and I loved exploring creativity through graphic design and music videos. I had a huge imagination and an entire world going on inside my head, so I was always looking for things that represented that inner world. Whether it was music, tech, or creating something new, I was constantly searching for ways to express what I was thinking and feeling.
