Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Decker Brown
Hi Elizabeth, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
While I’ve always had a love for Maryland and animals, I only discovered I had somewhat decent sewing skills during COVID. Working from home meant I wasn’t commuting four hours a day to my job in DC, which gave me a lot more free time. Add in a dog and a COVID puppy, and I had the bright idea to save some money by making collars and bandanas myself. Thanks to TikTok and Google, I taught myself the basics, and before I knew it, I was whipping up bandanas like a pro. That led to an online store, a crash course in social media, and jumping into my first market. These days, I spend most weekends meeting people and chatting about their pets at local markets. It’s become a busy 5 to 9 after my 9 to 5, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest struggles has been avoiding burnout. Running a small business, especially one you’re passionate about, means the line between work and life blurs quickly. There’s always something more to do—another market to attend, another collaboration idea, another product launch I’d love to make happen. But at some point, you realize you’re not a superhero (as much as I’d love to wear a cape while sewing). I’ve had to learn the power of saying “no.” It’s tough because I want to do it all, but it’s just not possible.
I’ve scaled back on doing markets every weekend to give myself some breathing room and to actually enjoy a weekend every now and then! I think a lot of business owners hit that wall of burnout at some point, and stepping back for a bit helps remind you why you started in the first place. For me, it’s the joy of creating something unique and seeing people—and their dogs—love it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
When I’m not behind a sewing machine, stitching up cute accessories for furry friends, I’m working as an environmental policy specialist (I know, quite the plot twist, right?). My professional life often surprises people when they ask what I do outside of running The Maryland Dog Company. But yes, in my “9 to 5” world, I work in the government on environmental policy, helping to shape the laws and regulations that protect our planet.
I’ve earned two Bachelor of Science degrees—one in Agribusiness Management & Rural Development and another in Energy & Natural Resource Management from West Virginia University (Go Mountaineers!), plus a Master’s degree in Environmental Law from Carey Law in Baltimore. It all started with a single Land Use Policy class during my freshman year, and here I am today, working in a rewarding field that keeps me both busy and inspired.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
At The Maryland Dog Company, collaboration and connection are at the heart of what we do! I absolutely love teaming up with other businesses and individuals who share my passion for pets and creativity. If you have a fun idea in mind, I’m all ears! You can reach out to me anytime through my website or social media—I’m always excited to hear new proposals.
For those looking to shop, my market schedule is conveniently posted on my website under the Shop Local tab, or you can browse my full collection online. Just a heads up, though: it’s a one-woman show here, so a little patience goes a long way!
And remember, supporting a small business doesn’t always mean opening your wallet. If you enjoy my posts, share them with your friends! Spreading the word is just as valuable and helps keep the pet-loving community thriving.
