Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Montana Martinez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Montana, appreciate you joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Yes, I am a happier business owner. I do not wish I had a normal job. I had a ‘typical job’ for five years out of college and I like being completely in charge of my own schedule despite the uncertainty in when I will be paid. However doing real estate does come with it’s frustrations. It is a ton of work to be successful, and there have been several times where I have wondered if I had made the right decision for my life and decided moving back to Hawaii and going back to my old job specifically in the first six months because I had zero income with more work than I have previously done. You make thousands or hundreds of calls, get a bunch of nos and finally get someone to say “maybe” to selling or buying a home. Every time I felt like this, I told myself I was too far in to quit and worked harder.

Montana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a realtor located in Lake Havasu City, AZ. I decided to get into real estate about a year and a half ago, moved from Hawaii, and got licensed. I work with my clients to find the best deal on a house they want to purchase or help them get their home sold at a top market price.
What differentiates me from others is that I am diligent, detailed oriented and readily available. Additionally, my job is not just to list the home or to find the home. I am with my clients every step of the way to ensure a smooth transaction with minimal stress to my clients. I like to make their transactions as stress free as possible!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Getting into real estate was a huge pivot for me. I had lived in Hawaii for a decade and had been working in mental health however did not want to go back to school to get a higher degree. Therefore, I felt that I had grown as much as a could in the profession. I decided I did not want to work for anyone else and decided I wanted to go into real estate. I struggled with making the final decision on if I should go and went back and forth a few times. But I decided to leave and lived with family while I got licensed in real estate. It still feels risky because its all commission based and you do not know when you will get paid next however it has become consistent over the last six months.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
For the first seven months of being a Realtor, I did not make any money. I also did not want another job because I knew it would take longer to get consistent clients in real estate. So to make ends meet, I was traveling to LA, Vegas, and Phoenix for a week out of every month and picking up acting/modeling jobs. While I was doing that I was also working in real estate daily as well as working 8-10 hour days with travel between my jobs. I put about 50,000 miles on my car in a year.
