We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sarah Plasencia. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with sarah below.
Sarah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I believe very much in events and circumstances that have happened, or are ongoing in your life, usually impedes or accelerates where you are career wise in your life. Where you are allowed to be. My artistic skills were always there, before I started my Sarah Plasencia Art business upon my 50th birthday. Maybe they were somewhat hidden and not used to their full potential whilst the fast and chaotic pace of life happened around me in England and Germany. I am English born and bred! For me art is never wasted, and it is always available at any time, if you want it. Its easily assessable. Art for me offers me a daily appreciation of the artistic sights offered in life, such as in nature, architecture, cooking, reading and your ever-expanding imagination. Everything is an art form! Art is what is evoked inside of you and make you feel alive. Music is also art! I think art and music literally go hand in hand. Music runs in my extended family as well. My sister plays everything, the saxophone, clarinet, Piano, guitar, flute…
I am a self-taught artist. The ability was just naturally and magically there, as far back as I remember. I have had no formal training. I was supposed to have been going to College to study Art, design and Photography in the famous roman city of Bath, England. Instead, due to life’s curve balls I pivoted and ended up leaving school at 16 and then working full time doing administration, bookkeeping and accounts. I then got married, had 2 small children and emigrated to Munich, Germany, and then became a kindergarten teacher. I dabbled in art within that role, mainly using art as therapy for disabled children there. I emigrated once again to Miami, USA, and now split my time working part time running my art business and being a Nanny. I also dabble in journalism and regularly write reviews and reports locally. I am in a place right now where my two children have flown the nest, and I can dedicate more time to my art. Hence the acceleration in my art took off from that point at around 50 years of age.
I preliminarily do not have a set realm. I like to go with the flow. Art for me means complete artistic freedom, as there are no set rules or restriction in art. I use pencils, pens, acrylic paint, watercolor paints and oil paints. I have been known to incorporate, sand, shells and wood. I also do totally different art genres, such as line art, abstract art, traditional and nude art. I am very happy to paint whatever my clients want. I am happy to paint on walls, paper, canvas, wall murals, picture frames, stone painting, again whatever the client wants. I have often heard family members state, “if it does not move Sarah will paint it.” Maybe my sister Julia has heard the same, “if it can be played, Julia will play it.”

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I especially like doing pet portraits. I have my own rescue dog, called Pickle and 3 cats called Astra, Chicken and Dottie. All are foster fails! I have personally saved 25 plus sick puppies from euthanasia. I also have hand reared 75 neo natal kittens with milk bottles with 24 hour round the clock care. I love cats and dogs. Therefore, it is a pleasure to try and capture these beloved pets. It is always a pleasure for me to capture a pet’s presence and charm for their owners. I tweak each art piece until they say, “that’s it!”

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding thing about being an artist is your art piece physically exists in real time, and you had created it. It is a one-off piece, never to be repeated. Most art is hung from a wall, usually inside a home. Depending on the amount of time you are in this space, equates to long hours with my art! Thats quite cool and an honor. I hope it brings them great pleasure. It also makes me feel happy that I have been a part of that.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Exposure is so difficult. I refuse to ever pay for advertising. I want my art business to grow organically. I receive commissions from Instagram and word of mouth. I love blogging on Instagram. I blog about my new art pieces. I also blog about plenty of other subjects too! I am so curious and inquisitive. I discover all the hidden gems, whether they are nature spots, arty farty spot, new restaurants or hidden historical gems. I am a walking, talking and blogging English born and bred lady!
