We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dan Mendoza. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dan below.
Alright, Dan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Since I was a Kid, I have always been drawing. If is wasn’t characters from my favorite cartoons, I was making up my own and writing stories about them. I started to think that I could make comics for a living around 7th grade.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into the industry after No comic company interested in my art style. So I made my own comic called Zombie Tramp. The book was a mixture of things i love. Horror movies, Anime, and Exploitation Grindhouse movies. The book took off and I have been drawing Zombie Tramp now for 15 years.
Today I have been a self publisher of the title and many others that I created with my Wife Knightmare Lynch. Our company is called Still Ill Comics.
My art style seems to stand out from others because it comes from influences of American and Japanese animation instead of the influences of other comic book artists.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the things I had to learn/get over early in my career was that not everyone will like what you draw. Some people won’t like your stories and Some people will be rude to you about it. Starting to do conventions early in my career to promote Zombie Tramp, I would get “stink face” looks and negative feedback about my characters either being too violent or too sexy. I couldn’t believe it sometimes, the rudeness and shaming nature of peoples comments. After a while I started to learn not to take it personally. What I do is not everyone’s cup of tea when it comes to comics. They can stick to capes and long underwear.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The biggest Reward is definitely Being my own boss. I get up Every Morning and Make comic books until the evening.
