Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tolulope Odebunmi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tolulope, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Seeing myself as an actor has been a journey full of ups and downs. As the saying goes, “hard times don’t last, but strong people do.” I’ve had the opportunity to work on many projects, but one that stands out is my experience with the British Council’s Film Lab Africa. It was an incredible opportunity where I got to write, direct, produce, and act in my own film. Film Lab Africa provided me with a grant to bring my vision to life.
The selection process was intense, with thousands of entries submitted. They narrowed it down to 60 participants, and even now, I still ask myself, “Why did they choose me?” It felt like a dream come true—no, it is a dream come true. We went through 14 weeks of classes, pitching our projects to industry professionals, and eventually, I was one of the 20 selected to receive the grant. I poured my heart and soul into this project, and the experience itself is worthy of being a film.
The facilitators were world-renowned filmmakers, and each class felt like a dream come to life. We moved from the training phase to post-production, applying everything we had learned, then went into full production and back to post-production again. They didn’t just teach us how to fish; they showed us where to fish.
What makes this journey even more special is that the British Council has continued to support and promote our films, pushing them to platforms and places beyond our expectations. This is the first time a project like this has been done in Africa, and I am grateful to be part of this history-making experience.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I am a dynamic and versatile actor with extensive experience across film, television, and live theater. My work spans a range of complex roles, including Lagos Shepherd in African Magic’s Brethren, Ige in The Origin: Madam Koikoi, Taofik in King of Boys 2, and Ijakumo in African Magic’s Itura.
Beyond acting, I am equally passionate about writing, producing, and directing, which allows me to approach storytelling from multiple creative angles. I am driven by a deep commitment to my craft and the belief that storytelling serves as a powerful catalyst for social change and development.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I believe film making is a catalyst for change and reform. . So I input that in the way I tell my stories. I believe Africa needs to retell our story. I create local content with an international appel.
