We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jordan Byrd. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jordan below.
Jordan , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
At Byrdhouse Books, our mission is deeply rooted in community, connection, and the love of stories that bring people together. “Women- Owned, Community-Grown” is the motto around here and growing up in Colfax, spending so much of my life in Kernersville, I watched the town grow, change, and flourish. This local pride inspired me to create a space where people feel welcomed, celebrated, and encouraged to shop local, supporting the vibrant web of small businesses that make this community special.
Books have always been my steadfast companions throughout life’s many chapters. From working in the corporate coffee world, to seeking peace in Yellowstone National Park, to returning home and rediscovering my love for this town and for Sam, my now-fiancé. I know firsthand how a good story can ground you, give you hope, or simply offer an escape when you need it most. Byrdhouse Books is more than a bookstore; it’s a place where those experiences can be shared, nurtured, and passed on.
What makes our mission meaningful to me is that it’s a celebration of home. Every piece of Byrdhouse Books from the local products we carry, to collaborations with women-owned businesses, to events like “Reading Time with Molly” featuring my fiancé, Officer Slyman, is woven with the intent to give back to this community that has given so much to me. We want people to feel that warmth and connection the moment they step inside. That’s why Byrdhouse Books exists, to be a haven for book lovers, a gathering place for our community, and a testament to the belief that supporting local means supporting each other.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Jordan, and I’m the proud owner of Byrdhouse Books, a cozy bookstore located in the heart of downtown Kernersville, NC. Growing up in nearby Colfax, I spent countless hours in Kernersville and watched it grow into the vibrant community it is today. Although life took me away from my hometown for a while, including working in the corporate coffee industry and spending a season reconnecting with myself at Yellowstone National Park, it was Kernersville’s charm that drew me back. When I found the perfect spot for my bookstore, I knew it was time to turn a lifelong dream into reality.
Books have always been a constant in my life. Through my travels, career changes, and major life transitions, they provided comfort and inspiration. This personal connection to books inspired me to create Byrdhouse Books, a space that is warm, inviting, and filled with stories waiting to be shared. The name of the store is close to my heart as well: “Byrdhouse” ties into my last name, Byrd, and evokes the feeling of home, something I hope every visitor feels when they walk through the door.
At Byrdhouse Books, we primarily sell new books with a special focus on local authors and stories, as well as locally made products. Supporting the local community is one of my top priorities, so I make sure to feature items from women-owned businesses and artisans from the area. We also offer unique, community-centered events, from paint and sips, to bunny book club!
One thing that sets Byrdhouse Books apart is our emphasis on creating an environment that fosters connection. Whether it’s through our “Chirps and Chapters” book club or during our creative events like the recent murder mystery night, my goal is to make Byrdhouse Books a space where people feel part of a community. Additionally, we’re collaborating with local businesses to bring unique offerings, such as custom candles.
I’m most proud of the overwhelming support we’ve received from the community, from local businesses offering advice and encouragement, to friends and family stepping up to help bring this dream to life. My fiancé Sam, my biggest cheerleader, and my girlies have made the journey extra special.
What I want potential customers to know is that Byrdhouse Books is more than just a bookstore; it’s a place where stories come alive, connections are made, and memories are created. It’s a space for everyone, from the casual reader to the avid bookworm. I’m here to make sure that when you walk in, you find something that resonates with you, whether it’s a new favorite book, a piece of local craftsmanship, or simply the comfort of a warm, welcoming atmosphere!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
After spending five years working in corporate within the coffee industry, I decided to pivot in a significant way. That job took me from my hometown of Kernersville, NC, to Connecticut, where I gained valuable experience and insight into business operations. After a year and a half living in CT, I found myself back in Kernersville, a town that had grown and changed while I was away. It sparked a realization that it was time for a different path.. one where I could be my own boss and pursue a long-held dream. Owning a bookstore had always been on my mind, but finding the right moment and place was crucial. When I came across the perfect spot in downtown Kernersville, I knew it was time to pivot from the stability of working under someone else to the challenges and freedoms of running my own business. That’s how Byrdhouse Books came to life.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Building a platform on social media for Byrdhouse Books was an organic and community-driven experience. I started by sharing updates about the progress of the store’s renovation and my vision for what I wanted it to become: a welcoming, locally-focused space in downtown Kernersville. I was honest and transparent, which resonated with people. I shared my personal story, how books had always been a constant in my life through all my moves and career changes, and that genuine connection helped build trust and excitement. I also prioritized engaging with other local businesses, supporting their events, and celebrating their successes. This created a network of mutual support. By collaborating and cross-promoting with other local entrepreneurs, I expanded my reach and showed that Byrdhouse Books was part of something bigger than just one store, it was part of the community. My biggest piece of advice when growing your socials is to be authentic!
