Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassidy Sutton
Hi Cassidy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In the spring of 2016, I decided to drop out of college and pursue writing as a means to make money. I had no idea how to do it, but I knew that if I stayed in school, I’d commit my time to the wrong career instead of pursuing my passions. Making a name for myself took a while. It required discipline and grit, but I’m now an award-winning creative writer in nonfiction and have successfully released my first children’s book.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For me, the hardest parts were getting people to take me seriously. I had to prove that I wasn’t just another girl writing on the internet.
Pursing your passion comes with ups and downs and you need to be okay with both. There are times when you think there’s no end in sight and you question if the drudgery is worth it. Then, you have the big moments. The moments when you sell your first book, read a great review, learn you’re nominated for something, or someone tells you you’re good at what you do and want more information about your projects.
The big wins feel great and you believe that you’re projects are finally worthy. But the other times- the times when no one’s heard of you and you’re left staring at your computer screen wondering if this is all you’ll amount to- those moments are just as important. You have to be okay with both. You can’t have the big wins without the dark moments.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I write creative nonfiction and children’s fiction, both for books and TV.
I released my first children’s book A Home for KAKEman in November of 2023 and sold almost 600 copies (which isn’t bad for debut book!). I’m currently writing my second children’s book.
I also co-wrote the Emmy-winning documentary Dawn of Doppler. This film won two prestigious journalistic awards and took first place in the Kansas Association of Broadcasters awards in 2023. Additionally, I served as the associate producer for a local journalistic piece that investigated the death of a young woman in a house fire (I didn’t do much on this film except call the victims of the fire and schedule interviews, but the TV credit is nice).
Before any of this, I earned my living as a content writer for online businesses. My experience in administration and freelance writing is what led me to working at KAKE, ABC.
I’m really proud of all of my projects, but Dawn of Doppler is the most successful project I’ve worked on. It’s definitely opened doors for other opportunities.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite memories is me playing in a box all day. With some colored markers, I turned the box into a rocket ship and had a blast all day. I plan to turn this memory into a children’s book.
