Today we’d like to introduce you to Ameily Chang
Hi Ameily, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey to where I am today is marked by a continuous pursuit of growth and passion for animation. It all started with a simple frame-by-frame animation I made for my classmates in grade 6. While that experience planted the seed, it wasn’t until my undergrad years at Parsons, majoring in illustration, that an animation elective truly reignited my passion.
Despite the challenges, including an unexpected detour back to Taiwan due to the pandemic, I never stopped hustling. In Taiwan, I juggled full-time jobs (first as an artist in XAC Game Studio then as an animator in Dcard), freelance work, and maintaining a social media presence to reach potential clients. My efforts paid off when a viral fan art for Lo-fi Girl led to a contract position with them.
With exposure and experience came more and better opportunities. I built a reputation and a network that allowed me to become self-sufficient through freelance and contract work alone. This success was fueled by my dedication to continuously refining my craft and taking on projects that pushed my creative boundaries. Now, as a contract animator/designer for Lo-fi Girl and KURE8 Kombucha, while freelancing for other clients, I continue to push the boundaries of my craft, always eager to take on new challenges and grow as an artist. Looking back, I believe my journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and the willingness to seize every opportunity.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road; there were numerous challenges along the way. Balancing full-time jobs with freelance work and later managing both work and full-time studies demanded significant time management and sacrifice. Returning to Taiwan unexpectedly due to the pandemic posed its own set of challenges, requiring me to adapt quickly to new environments and build a client base from scratch. Additionally, the uncertainty of freelance work, combined with maintaining a consistent social media presence, added pressure to keep up with the evolving demands of the industry.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an animator and designer with a passion for translating creative ideas into visually captivating animations and designs. My work spans various projects, including animated music videos, social media content, and branding materials. I specialize in storyboarding, rough animation, visual design, and motion graphics, contributing to every aspect of the creative process.
On my Instagram, where my content is tailored to a specific audience, I’m known for creating wholesome, relatable, and cute animated couple content that celebrates romance and love. This personal style highlights my strength in visual storytelling, capturing emotions and connecting with viewers in a meaningful way. In my professional work, my style is more versatile, adapting to different project needs and contexts, but the core of my approach remains the same: delivering visual storytelling that resonates deeply with audiences and strikes a chord.
I’m particularly proud of the impact my work has made across different platforms. From high-profile projects like a collaboration with Marvel and music videos for artists/bands such as Stream of Praise, to the growing engagement on my Instagram, where my reels have garnered millions of views, I take pride in creating content that not only stands out but also creates a lasting impression. Additionally, I’m proud of “Whispers of Unspoken Moments,” an award-winning animation that blends my personal journey with Taiwan’s cultural richness. This frame-by-frame animation delves into seemingly mundane human emotions, inviting viewers to experience universal themes of love and nostalgia within the ambiance of Taiwan. Created entirely by me over six months, it includes all aspects from storyboarding to animation, painting, editing, compositing, and sound design.
What sets me apart is my ability to blend versatility with a strong sense of visual storytelling, ensuring that each project, whether personal or professional, speaks directly to its audience in an engaging and memorable way.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is creating meaningful and resonant visual storytelling that connects deeply with audiences. I believe that animation and design are powerful tools for conveying emotions, experiences, and ideas in a way that can truly impact people. My goal is to craft work that not only stands out visually but also strikes a chord on an emotional level, whether it’s through a heartfelt animation or a compelling design.
This focus on meaningful storytelling stems from my personal experiences and cultural background. I find immense satisfaction in exploring themes that are both universally relatable and deeply personal, and in using my skills to evoke genuine responses from viewers. The ability to share stories that celebrate human emotions, cultural richness, and personal journeys is what drives me and gives my work purpose.
Ultimately, what matters most is making a positive difference through my art and contributing to a greater understanding and appreciation of the stories we all share.
