Today we’d like to introduce you to Hilary Hays Greenhalgh
Hi Hilary, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started out interning for a local designer who specializes in construction design. At the time, I thought I wanted to be more in the space of soft furnishings. I liked the work I did for her, but I don’t think I fully understood it at the time. I enrolled in a Master of Interior Design and Architecture program shortly after.
I started Little Green House Interiors as a way to dip my toes into small projects while I was in school because I wasn’t qualified enough to get a full-time job. I started on thumbtack with little odds and end jobs. Soon, Little Green House Interiors became an obsession. I was really falling in love with what I was doing and I wanted to get more work.
I started calling builders in the area and setting up meetings and making connections in the hopes of landing more work. That is when I started a relationship with my first builder and started doing construction design myself. The more I got into it, the more I realized that my passion is with construction design.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t say the road has been smooth. Mostly because I was starting completely from scratch. Getting where I am has required a lot of patience and persistence. There were a lot of tough days where I wondered if I was doing the right thing. No matter how hard it got though, my gut always told me this was where I was meant to be.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in construction design, but my style is very traditional. I think in a way that makes me unique because so many designers in the space have a very. modern style, whereas my old soul comes out in my work often. I am known for unconventional design choices, and wallpaper, wallpaper, wallpaper.
I am most proud of how far I have come. I started with a very small bedroom design and now I am in high-end kitchens and bathrooms, designing the most important parts of my client’s homes. It is really an honor to be sought after and respected for such an important task.
I honestly think what sets me apart from others is my ability to connect with my clients. I see them as more than clients, but as friends and I truly enjoy getting to know them, their stories, and how they live and function in their daily lives so that I can get inside their heads to design gorgeous spaces that function perfectly for them.
What were you like growing up?
If you would ask my mom what I was like growing up, I think she would say bossy. I have always been a take charge person, which is why it makes sense that I am a business owner. As far as interest, I spent every second of my spare time drawing. Drawing houses, floor plans, designing homes on sims, and redecorating my bedroom. Although I didn’t realize it myself until I was an adult, I think all indications that I would grow up to work in homes have always been there.
