Today we’d like to introduce you to Moon Chang
Hi Moon, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
When I was young, I wanted to become a fine artist, especially paintings and sculpting, for a long time. However when I was 7 years old, I started to draw human figures with clothes, dressing up them, writing the years and styles, and also price as well, and I guess that was the moment that I wanted to become a fashion designer. When starting fashion, I just did not want to become an ordinary fashion designer, I wanted to be a “fashion designer who also does fine art”. Fine art and painting is the first and original communication tool that I use to communicate with my family and society, and it progressed to fashion design, something we can wear in reality. However, I do not literally combine painting with fashion, I prefer to give a hint that my aesthetic, conception, and technique is from fine art. I have worked on many different genres of fine art, from hyperrealism to abstract paintings, installations as well as video art, and still exploring them in corporate fashion in different ways.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Fashion education itself is very competitive in NYC, in my age of 19, I decided to come to NYC to be a fashion designer, the whole journey was tough. I had a bad and bloody accident while working on fashion due to overwork and no sleep, and diagnosed with PTSD(Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), and had life threatened feeling when doing fashion. I realized this is not just my experience, it is for everyone who is in the fashion industry, moreover, people living in this society. I challenged myself to solve mental health from the perspective of a fashion designer.
Of course, PTSD and mental health is a very heavy topic for fashion. Sadly, mental health is not t exactly a recurring topic on fashion overall. However, I chose PTSD as the main concept of my collections because I found a hope that fashion has a healing power. This journey started with my personal experience being a victim of the fashion industry, fashion overcame my health.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
For Moon Chang, I have two different lines from my brand, one is the couture line, called Hybrid Beauty, mainly focusing on traditional couture using recycled materials with traditional couture fabrics. The other is a ready to wear line, VENUS IN BLACK is a lifestyle and contemporary line, inspired by my couture collection. I offer ready to wear and products for humans and dogs so that they can mix and match.
I wish to portray that every existence in this world has both softness and toughness. To do so, I developed my own fabrications and silhouettes. One of my signatures is leather like fabrics made out of recycled plastics, which can sustainably substitute the leather. Our aim is to provide great designed and fabricated products to support circulative and sustainable fashion. However, as the brand founder, who is responsible for product and textile safety and sustainability testing from the lab, so that customers can wear safe products we made.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Definitely, having a mentor and social networking is important, especially in current industry. Both in-person and online networking are very helpful, but before starting networking, I found out that learning how to introduce and pitch myself to others is useful, from that, you can build the connection! Also, I am not only attending fashion events, but also I attend many other events related to science, technology, environment, or even, social justice because meeting many new people and hearing about their stories can inspire you.
