Hi Aprajita, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.

From a young age, I was captivated by the world around me. Born and raised in India, my journey into the art world began early, marked by winning the “All India Camel Color Contest” in third grade. This recognition fueled my passion for art, and I continued painting throughout my school and college years, participating in various art competitions and showcasing my work in a couple of shows in India.

Despite never attending formal art classes, I nurtured my talent through self-exploration, constantly experimenting with different genres and techniques. After completing my education, I embarked on a 17-year career in the corporate world. However, my love for art never waned, and I continued to create art in my spare time, staying connected to the art community.

In 2020, during a planned sabbatical from my corporate career, I fully embraced my identity as a professional artist, founding Aprajita.Art. This transition marked a new chapter in my life, filled with both challenges and rewards.

Since then, I have had the privilege of showcasing my work at prestigious art fairs including the Affordable Art Fair NYC, Art Basel Miami, and Art Expo NYC. My journey has also led to features in various art magazines, awards from esteemed institutions like the Salmagundi Club in NYC, and the exciting milestone of having my artworks included in ParkWest Gallery auctions.

Every step of this journey has been driven by my passion to capture and share the beauty I see in the world. As I celebrate the 4th anniversary of Aprajita.Art, I am filled with gratitude for the support of my family, friends, and the art community. Here’s to many more years of creativity and inspiration.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

My journey to becoming an artist has been filled with many rewarding moments, but it has also been marked by significant challenges. These obstacles have shaped my path and made me the artist I am today.

1. Transitioning from a Corporate Career:
After spending 17 years in the corporate world, making the decision to leave a stable career and pursue art full-time was daunting. The security and predictability of a corporate job were hard to let go of, and the uncertainty of an artistic career posed a significant challenge. It required a leap of faith and a lot of courage to follow my true passion.

2. Self-Teaching:
As a self-taught artist, I faced the challenge of mastering techniques and mediums without formal training. This journey required a lot of perseverance, experimentation, and learning from my mistakes. Without the guidance of a teacher, I had to rely on my determination and resourcefulness to develop my skills and find my artistic voice.

3. Balancing Time and Responsibilities:
While transitioning to a full-time artist, I had to balance my time and responsibilities effectively. Managing my art practice, participating in exhibitions, and building my online presence, all while handling personal commitments, was a constant juggling act. Finding time to create while also managing the business side of art was a significant challenge.

4. Financial Uncertainty:
The financial instability that often comes with an artistic career was another major hurdle. Unlike a corporate job with a steady paycheck, art sales can be unpredictable. It took time to build a steady income stream from my art, and during this period, I had to carefully manage my finances and stay motivated despite the uncertainty.

5. Gaining Recognition:
Breaking into the art world and gaining recognition was not easy. Competing with many talented artists and trying to get my work noticed required persistence and resilience. Participating in art fairs, applying for exhibitions, and getting featured in magazines were all challenging but necessary steps to build my reputation.

6. Overcoming Self-Doubt:
Like many artists, I have struggled with self-doubt and the fear of not being good enough. Comparing myself to others and questioning my abilities were significant mental hurdles. Overcoming these internal challenges involved a lot of self-reflection, positive thinking, and support from loved ones.

7. Staying True to My Vision:
In a world where trends often dictate success, staying true to my artistic vision and resisting the pressure to conform was challenging. I had to trust in my unique perspective and continue creating work that resonated with my personal passion and style.

Each of these challenges has been a stepping stone in my journey, teaching me valuable lessons and pushing me to grow as an artist. Despite the obstacles, the joy of creating and the fulfillment of following my passion have made it all worthwhile.
