Today we’d like to introduce you to Seth Young
Hi Seth, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My mom was actually the one who first introduced me to drawing. I was just four years old at the time but it was like a light coming on in my head. I knew that art was what I wanted to be doing for the rest of my life.
Around ten years old I discovered comics which became my new obsession. I would constantly be drawing and creating them. Gradually I ended up getting in painting then digital illustration.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s probably been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences. I’m still trying to break into the comics industry which can be unbelievably frustrating. If you’re going into the artistic field definitely be prepared for rejection and failure. However if you truly love art and the medium of comics you’ll stick with it and improve. Praying to God to help doesn’t hurt either. Faith definitely helped to keep me going.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I paint pretty much anything but I mainly focus on illustration and comic art. I love to just paint in general. If I had a favorite subject it would probably be sci-fi and fantasy. Probably one of the reasons I love doing anything in the Warhammer 40k universe. My style is cartoony with realism. Very influenced by manga’s and western paintings.
Hmmmmm the piece I’m most proud of is the comic I’m working on with writer William Clemons. I made the decision to paint the whole book. The other is a painting of spawn. For some reason the picture just ended up being a delight to work on.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see the shift in creator owned properties. there’s renewed do-it-yourself attitude coming back into comics and art . Most people are fed up with the industries and simply want to tell their own stories and art. Also I think Warhammer 40k will be the new Star Wars.
