Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Lohrer
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my business sort of by accident.
I was in a career transition, having built a career focused on climbing the ladder and being driven by external success. It led directly to a place of burnout and I had to re-evaluate what success looked like for me in my mid-thirties. As I started to focus on what made me happy, my business sort of found me. I was spending a lot of time expanding my relationships in the agency industry and the more I understood where the pain points were and where I could add value, the more the vision for my business became a reality.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It depends how you look at it!
There are always struggles and failures, it’s a part of finding success. The road was smooth in the sense that there was momentum, I felt like I was moving in the right direction overall and I really believed in what I was doing so it was energizing. Compared to other moments I’ve had in my career, where I felt like I was swimming against the current – this was a general feeling of everything falling into place. But sure, there were tons of moments where I struggled with imposter syndrome, struggling with the timing or logistics, or failed launches. But you learn through failures and continue to grow.
There will always be moments of struggle along the way but if you’re feeling like every day is a struggle, I’ve learned to take that as a sign that you’re probably on the wrong path.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I’m a scaling strategist for agencies and consultants. I focus on working with agencies and consultants to scale smarter, not harder.
What sets me apart from most consultants or coaches in the space is my intimate relationship with the agency industry over the past 14 years. I’ve held positions ranging from Receptionist to Executive Director of Growth & Development to Founder. I have a ton of empathy and deep understanding for what agency owners and consultants face when it comes to competition, winning business, retaining business and growing. I’ve lived their experience and appreciate how challenging it is to build a creative business.
But I’m really driven to help them build a business they love. A business they actually WANT to work in.
Sometimes that means breaking industry standards.
I’m really proud and fortunate to work with incredibly talented people in this industry. Nothing lights me up more than watching them triple their revenue or win their next best client…but more importantly, those things allow them to work less, book an extra vacation for their family or invest in themselves.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m an open book about my journey and my business, so anyone who knows me knows my story. I’m not one who presents an instagramable filtered image. I am much more interested personally in real stories, in lessons, in failures – and know my clients are the same.
But I think most of my clients probably don’t realize how much I respect and admire them as people, business owners, parents, etc. They inspire me and make my business better, just as much as I’m doing that for them.
