Today we’d like to introduce you to Jency Hogan
Hi Jency, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a young budding actress at 16 I did my first one-woman show. Then I got a degree in Theatre at Louisiana Tech. After that, I moved to Los Angeles to purse my career as a film actress for ten years. I came home when I was 30 and met my photographer/filmmaker dream man-husband and we run our own production company and acting school in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
I am a creative that loves to embrace huge challenges, and I’ve always wanted to produce one film and one theater show a year. I love acting in other people’s movies and it will always be my first love and I plan to do it til I’m 80. I made a pact with God that if I could play impactful roles like the grandmother in The Boy With the Striped Pajamas when I’m 75 or 80, I would dedicate my life to acting and producing forever. I am a character-actor with a desire to tell great stories of unsung heroes throughout history. I’m always growing and evolving and open to where the grandmaster’s plan takes me next.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve always enjoyed a good challenge, hence the reason I picked this career. I set goals that feel impossible and like my very own Kilimanjaro. Acting and producing are by far the most un-secure careers that you could pick with great hopes that your gamble will eventually hit a jackpot. My life is full of highs and lows with red carpet premieres, production dates, rejection phone calls, auditions, and a shit ton of social media.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have made over ten short films and many features over the years, working as an actress, producer, director, and sometimes wearing many hats at once. I enjoy the creative process of bringing something to life and having a childlike essence, and I try to keep myself inspired by watching other historical dramas I love. I have dreams to create epic historical dramas that will live on for years.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
No luck here. The constant ability to volunteer and put myself out there when opportunities look bleak led me to meet so many people in Louisiana who were also filmmakers or creating a film festivals or visiting here, and those connections led to more connections. They always say work begets work and I always worked hard as a young actress to network my ass off and create a career for myself when no one believed in me yet.
I also spent years in studying the craft of acting which led the confidence in my ability to play roles outside my comfort zone. So I don’t think it’s luck, it’s hard work and dedication and constantly volunteering your time to help people.
