We were lucky to catch up with Genesis Falls recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Genesis thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
So one main project that I’m working on and will always be ongoing is called Through My Lens- An Artist Story. This is a collective work that focuses on BIPOC artists across different artistic mediums. This project came up from just looking around on social media and other platforms and not always seeing other artists that look like me. I want to be able to share a intimate stories and showcase us.
Genesis, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Genesis Falls, known as Geno, is a film photographer in Chicago whose work explores the raw essence of humanity through black-and-white film. Her journey began at age seven, capturing moments with her grandfather on a small instant camera—a fleeting experience that ignited a lifelong devotion. Geno’s background in Cinematography from Flashpoint Chicago, combined with her affinity for monochrome, has led her to center her art on people’s unseen stories and unfiltered lives. Exhibiting at spaces like Evanston Art Center, Chicago ArtSpace, and as part of the Black Women Photographers collective, Geno was recently awarded the 2023 Black Women’s Photography & Flickr Grant. Inspired by Gordon Parks’s philosophy—“It is the heart, not the eye, that should determine the content of the photograph”—her work delves into portraying people as they are, honoring their unique bodies and spirits in life’s fleeting moments.
Using vintage cameras that demand proximity and vulnerability, Geno’s process celebrates the tactile and intimate, making each image a tribute to the human spirit. Her art invites viewers to see beyond the surface, to connect with the familiar yet often ignored lives around them. Each photograph becomes a mirror, challenging audiences to reflect on their own perceptions, biases, and emotional awareness.
Genesis Falls’s photography is a call to truly see, connect, and honor our shared humanity, spotlighting the resilience and quiet strength in everyday lives that deserve to be seen and celebrated.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I feel. like the most rewarding part of my art and doing what I love is simple: I love being able to give people a glimpse of what I see through my eyes and just share other peoples story.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My main goal is to share my passion for film photography and cultivate a body of work that showcase other people of color.
