We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Erica Warner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Erica, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
How I came up with the name for my business is that a real close friend of mine helped me. I was doing my paperwork to start my business and one of the questions was what’s your business name? So my friend said name it after my great grandmother. Her name is Mildred, so my business name is Mildred’s Bar and Grill. Which was brilliant since she’s the reason why I like to cook and bake.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
A little about myself, my name is Erica Warner and I’m a mother and I love to cook and bake. You know when people are telling you that your food is so good that was a sign for me. I always wanted to have my own restaurant.
So a few years ago I did the paperwork to start my own restaurant business. I make different meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I also bake pies, cakes, cookies, and cupcakes.
What sets me apart from others is that I don’t stop going after what I want. It may take me some time but eventually I get what I’m after. I just don’t give up.
I’m most proud of myself for not giving up on my dream. I want people to know is that once you taste my food you’ll always want more of it.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I’ve had some difficult times and setbacks on my journey. I’ve been homeless with my children and in abusive relationships. None of that stopped me though. I stayed strong and kept going. And most of all I had God with me through everything on my journey. Without him by my side I don’t know where I’ll be today.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn is that most people aren’t for you. You’ll have a few who are for you but not very many. It kind of break my heart to see that people don’t like to see you do good with your life. One thing I know is that most people don’t want to see you be successful. I’m not like that. I want you to be successful at whatever you do.
